The 66th anniversary memorial service for the noble sacrifice spirit of martyr Kim Ju-yeol was held on the 14th at the Kim Ju-yeol Memorial Park in Namwon.
At the memorial service, attended by about 250 people including Mayor Choi Kyung-sik of Namwon, Kim Young-tae, the chairman of the Namwon City Council, provincial and city council members, veterans' organization leaders, students, and members of the Masan Kim Ju-yeol Memorial Association, they reflected on the martyr's will.
The event proceeded with the offering ceremony, memorial speeches, recitation of poems, memorial songs, floral tributes at the grave, and mourning attire. Particularly, about 100 elementary, middle, and high school students from the region also participated, honoring Kim Ju-yeol's dedication and sacrifice, and reflecting on the significance of democracy.
Kim Ju-yeol sacrificed himself in a police shooting during the protest against the fraudulent March 15th election in 1960 while preparing to enter Masan Commercial High School. His body was found in front of the sea in Masan on April 11 of the same year, sparking nationwide anger and becoming the spark of the April 19 Revolution.
Lee Young-no, the chairman of the Kim Ju-yeol Memorial Association, said, "Martyr Kim Ju-yeol is the martyr who ignited the flame of democratization against the fraudulent March 15th election," and added, "His historical struggle has become an important milestone in achieving democracy in South Korea."
Mayor Choi Kyung-sik stated, "Martyr Kim Ju-yeol is a proud democratic martyr born in Namwon," and expressed, "Namwon City will continue to strive to remember and uphold the noble spirit of the martyr."
남원, 제66주년 3·14 김주열 열사 추모 제향 엄수
김주열 열사의 숭고한 희생정신을 기리는 제66주년 3·14 추모 제향이 14일 남원 김주열 열사 추모공원에서 엄수됐다.
이날 추모 제향에는 최경식 남원시장을 비롯해 김영태 남원시의회 의장, 도의원·시의원, 보훈단체장, 학생, 마산 김주열 열사 기념사업회 회원 등 250여 명이 참석해 열사의 뜻을 되새겼다.
행사는 제향을 시작으로 추모사, 추모시 낭독, 추모 노래, 묘소 헌화, 음복 순으로 진행됐다. 특히 지역 초·중·고 학생 100여 명도 함께해 엄숙한 분위기 속에서 김주열 열사의 헌신과 희생을 기리고 민주주의의 의미를 되새겼다.
김주열 열사는 1960년 마산상고 입학을 준비하던 중 3·15 부정선거 규탄시위에 참여했다가 경찰의 발포로 희생됐다. 이후 같은 해 4월 11일 마산 앞바다에서 주검으로 발견되면서 전국적인 분노를 불러일으켰고, 4·19혁명의 도화선이 됐다.
이영노 김주열 열사 기념사업회 회장은 “김주열 열사는 3·15 부정선거에 맞서 민주화의 불꽃을 지핀 열사”라며 “그 역사적 투쟁은 대한민국 민주주의를 쟁취하는 중요한 이정표가 됐다”고 말했다.
최경식 남원시장은 “김주열 열사는 남원이 낳은 자랑스러운 민주열사”라며 “남원시는 앞으로도 열사의 숭고한 정신을 기억하고 계승하는 데 더욱 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.
