The cheers of "Long Live Korean Independence" that echoed in Jeonju on March 13, 1919, were recreated 107 years later.
On the morning of the 14th, the Jeonju branch of the Gwangbokhoe held an event called 'Jeonju 3.13 Manse Movement Reenactment' at Jeonju Sinheung High School and Pungnammun Square to reflect on the spirit of the independence movement and the historical significance of the Manse Movement.
The Jeonju 3.13 Manse Movement was the largest independence movement in Jeollabuk Province, led by Pastor Kim In-jeon of Seomun Church, students from Sinheung School and Gijeon School, with around 10,000 people reportedly participating.
Participants in the event marched from Jeonju Sinheung High School to Pungnammun Square waving large Taegeuk flags and shouting "Long Live Korean Independence." At Pungnammun Square, there were memorial speeches for Woo Beom-gi, the former mayor of Jeonju, readings of the Declaration of Independence by descendants of patriots and student representatives, and a musical gala show commemorating the March 1st Movement.
Around 400 citizens, tourists, and youth participated in the event, which concluded with the singing of March 1st songs by preschoolers from Kokkiri Kindergarten and the three cheers of "Manse."
Lee Gyo-geon, the chairman of the Jeonju branch of the Gwangbokhoe, expressed hope that "this event will instill a sense of upright historical consciousness and identity in the youth and national pride in the citizens."
Former Mayor Woo Beom-gi also stated, "We will honor the noble sacrifices and courage of the pioneers, and strive together to uphold the spirit of the Jeonju 3.13 Manse Movement and not forget our proud history."
전주 3·13 만세운동 재현행사 개최…독립정신 되새겨
1919년 3월 13일 전주에서 울려 퍼졌던 대한독립 만세의 함성이 107년 만에 다시 재현됐다.
광복회 전주시지회는 14일 오전 전주신흥고등학교와 풍남문 광장 일원에서 ‘전주 3·13 만세운동 재현행사’를 열고 선열들의 독립운동 정신과 만세운동의 역사적 의미를 되새겼다.
전주 3·13 만세운동은 1919년 김인전 서문교회 목사와 신흥학교·기전학교 학생들을 중심으로 전주 남부시장에서 전개된 전북 최대 규모의 독립만세운동으로, 당시 1만여 명이 참여한 것으로 전해진다.
이날 행사 참가자들은 대형 태극기를 앞세우고 전주신흥고에서 풍남문 광장까지 태극기를 흔들며 “대한독립 만세”를 외쳤다. 이어 풍남문 광장에서는 우범기 전주시장의 기념사, 애국지사 후손과 학생 대표의 독립선언서 낭독, 3·1만세 뮤지컬 갈라쇼 등이 진행됐다.
행사에는 시민과 관광객, 청소년 등 400여 명이 함께했으며, 코끼리유치원 원생들의 3·1절 노래와 만세삼창을 끝으로 마무리됐다.
이교건 광복회 전주시지회장은 “이번 행사가 청소년들에게는 올곧은 역사의식과 정체성을, 시민들에게는 민족의 자긍심을 심어주는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다.
우범기 전주시장도 “선열들의 숭고한 희생과 용기를 기리고, 전주 3·13 만세운동의 정신을 계승해 자랑스러운 역사를 잊지 않도록 함께 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
