"Walther Thompson Hernandez's 'If I Go'"
The 27th Jeonju International Film Festival (co-executive directors Min Sung-wook and Jung Joon-ho) has announced the 10 films selected for the international competition.
The international competition section focuses on works by emerging directors who have directed less than three feature films, showcasing films that are being screened for the first time in Asia. The call for entries took place from November of last year to January of this year, with 421 submissions from 70 countries. The number of submissions by continent ranked Europe first, followed by Asia and North America in second and third place respectively. Among individual countries, the United States submitted the most films with a total of 44.
Programmer Kim Hyo-jeong stated, "It is interesting to note the significant increase in the number of American films, but I would like to draw attention to the fact that American films showed the most diversity in terms of genres and formal aspects," adding, "From comedy to horror, and from documentaries to experimental films, they showcased noticeable diversity and genre experimentation."
Directed by Walther Thompson Hernandez from California, the second feature film "If I Go" expands on the eponymous short film that garnered attention at the Sundance Film Festival, portraying the aspirations of a black boy living in the hood in a dreamlike manner. "Stone and Feathers" by Turkish director Ragıp Türk follows the struggles of "Nazire" trying to reclaim a child sent to an orphanage while she is in prison.
"Chronovisor," the debut film by the directing duo Jack Oon and Kevin Walker from Baltimore, USA, is an intellectual mystery that unfolds as the life of a reclusive scholar intertwines with a secret technology that can capture the past. "Slowly Disappearing Night" by Argentine directors Ezequiel Salinas and Ramiro Sonzini depicts the romanticized daily life of Pelu, who faces hardships as his profession changes but gets closer to cinema, through nostalgic black and white images.
"Nakao Hiromichi, who entered the competition section of the 21st Jeonju International Film Festival with 'Obake' (2019), delicately portrays a young man who moves into an old house and explores the memories of the house, the village, and time in 'Mitsuyuki: The Voice of Time.' "Six Weeks Later," directed by German director Charlyne Jansen, is a film depicting the events that unfold as a daughter who lost her mother goes through a mourning period of six weeks.
"Irene Bartolome's 'Another Summer Dream'" is a documentary set in Beirut that constantly interweaves the landscapes of the worn-out city and the interiors of apartments to create an imagistic hyper-reality. "Calf Puppet," directed by Indian poet and director Ankur Huda, is a hybrid project combining fiction and documentary, unraveling legendary stories based on impromptu acting and real experiences of village people.
Isabel Palaiy's "Fantasy" presents a fantasy where dreams and reality intertwine through an experimental form, mediated by a note discovered by chance. "Visitor," a feature film by Vitautas Katkus, depicts a man who returns to his hometown to sell his parents' house, portraying the strange emotions and nostalgia he encounters like a watercolor painting.

〈월터 톰프슨에르난데스 감독의 '이프 아이 고'〉
제27회 전주국제영화제(공동집행위원장 민성욱·정준호)가 국제경쟁 선정작 10편을 공개했다.
국제경쟁은 장편 기준 3편 미만의 영화를 연출한 신진 감독들의 작품을 대상으로, 아시아에서 최초로 상영되는 작품을 선보이는 섹션이다. 지난해 11월부터 올해 1월까지 공모했으며, 70개국에서 421편이 출품됐다. 대륙별 출품작 수는 유럽이 1위, 아시아와 북미가 각각 2, 3위로 뒤를 이었다. 단일 국가로는 미국이 총 44편으로 가장 많은 작품을 출품했다.
김효정 프로그래머는 “미국 작품 수가 대폭 늘어난 점도 흥미롭지만, 미국영화들이 장르와 형식적인 면에서 가장 다양했다는 점을 주목하고 싶다”라며 “코미디에서 호러, 다큐멘터리에서 실험영화까지 눈에 띄는 다양성과 장르적 시도를 보여줬다”라고 밝혔다.
미국 캘리포니아주 출신의 월터 톰프슨에르난데스 감독이 연출한 두 번째 장편 〈이프 아이 고〉는 선댄스영화제에서 주목받았던 동명의 단편을 확장한 프로젝트로 후드에 사는 흑인 소년의 애환을 몽환적으로 담아낸다. 튀르키예 출신 라그프 튀르크 감독의 〈돌과 깃털〉은 감옥에 간 사이 보육원에 보내진 아이를 되찾으려는 '나지레'의 고군분투를 따라가는 극영화다.
〈크로노바이저〉는 미국 볼티모어 출신의 연출 듀오 잭 오언, 케빈 워커 감독의 데뷔작으로, 은둔형 학자의 삶과 과거를 촬영할 수 있는 비밀 기술이 맞물리며 전개되는 지적 미스터리다. 아르헨티나 출신의 에세키엘 살리나스, 라미로 손시니 감독의 〈서서히 사라지는 밤〉은 직업이 바뀌며 삶은 힘겨워졌지만, 영화와는 더 가까워진 펠루의 일상을 낭만적인 흑백 이미지로 그린다.
〈오바케〉(2019)로 제21회 전주국제영화제의 경쟁부문에 진출했던 나카오 히로미치 감독의 〈미치유키: 시간의 목소리〉는 오래된 집으로 이사 온 청년이 집과 마을, 시간의 기억을 떠돌듯 탐험하는 과정을 섬세하게 풀어낸다. 독일 출신의 샤클린 얀센 감독이 연출한 〈6주 후〉는 어머니를 잃은 딸이 6주의 애도 시간을 갖게 되면서 벌어지는 일들을 그린 작품이다.
이레네 바르톨로메 감독의 〈또 다른 여름의 꿈〉은 베이루트를 배경으로, 낡은 도시의 풍경과 아파트 내부를 끊임없이 교차하며 이미지적 초현실을 구현한 다큐멘터리다. 인도 출신의 시인이자 감독 앙쿠르 후다가 연출한 〈송아지 인형〉은 픽션과 다큐멘터리가 혼합된 하이브리드 프로젝트로, 마을 사람들의 즉흥 연기와 실제 경험을 바탕으로 전설 같은 이야기를 풀어낸다.
이사벨 팔리아이 감독의 〈판타지〉는 우연히 발견한 노트를 매개로 꿈과 현실이 뒤엉키는 환상을 실험적인 형식으로 제시한다. 비타우타스 카트쿠스 감독의 극영화 〈방문자〉는 부모님의 집을 팔기 위해 고향으로 돌아온 한 남자가 마주한 낯선 감정과 노스탤지어를 수채화처럼 그려내는 작품이다.
