The National Gugak Center will present its representative traditional Korean opera, "Chunhyang," at Yeowon Hall from the 24th to the 26th of this month for three days. The performances will take place at 7 p.m. on the 24th and at 3 p.m. on the 25th and 26th, with the recommended age for audience members being school-age children and above.
"Chunhyang" is the National Gugak Center's representative traditional Korean opera based on the famous pansori "Chunhyangga," which is a symbol of Namwon. The opera compresses the flow of "Chunhyangga" into sections such as
The production is based on the original story but includes some new elements, combining composition, musical direction, and narrative dance to expand the aesthetics of traditional opera with a contemporary sensibility. Starting with the prologue "Under the moonlight, plum blossoms bloom, sending the scent of spring," and progressing through scenes like the separation with "My dear, please prepare me," the longing with "One day passes, two days pass," and the suffering with "Shall I go or shall I not go," the opera weaves together scenes that follow Chunhyang's emotions in a dense manner.
The performance is directed by Professor Bae Samsik of the Korean National University of Arts Theater Institute, with Professor Han Seungseok of Chung-Ang University's Department of Traditional Arts handling composition, and Kim Jeong overseeing the staging to enhance the completeness of the production. The performance is structured to draw emotions through music and sound, offering a stage where audiences can immerse themselves like watching a movie.
The National Gugak Center, led by Director Kim Junghyun, stated, "This production of 'Chunhyang' goes beyond simply reproducing a well-known classic, delving into the perspective and inner world of Chunhyang to convey the meaning of love that she ultimately sought to protect," adding, "We hope that the stage created by the National Gugak Center in Chunhyang's city of Namwon, with its unique aesthetics and interpretations, will deeply resonate with the audience."
The main roles include Seo Jinhee as Chunhyang, Go Junseok as Byeon Hakdo, Kim Hyunjoo as Wolmae, and Kim Junghoon as Lee Mongryong. A total of 37 performers, including the opera, instrumental, and dance troupes, as well as guest performers, will take the stage to present a multidimensional performance that combines the narrative and emotions of "Chunhyangga" with sound, music, and dance.
The Gugak Orchestra, under the artistic direction of Yoo Sujeong, emphasized that this production of "Chunhyang" is a collaborative work where all performers on stage, including the main and supporting roles and chorus, collectively create the narrative within their respective roles. They stated that by reducing dramatic devices and focusing more on music and sound, the stage will allow the audience to deeply immerse themselves in the characters' emotional journeys. Additionally, a performance in Osaka, Japan is scheduled for July, indicating that this performance at Yeowon Hall will serve as a starting point for the overseas expansion of the National Gugak Center's representative traditional Korean opera, "Chunhyang."

국립민속국악원 2026년 대표창극 <춘향>이 오는 24일부터 26일까지 3일간 예원당 무대에서 선보인다. 공연은 24일 오후 7시, 25일과 26일은 오후 3시에 진행되며, 관람연령은 취학아동 이상이다.
<춘향>은 판소리 다섯 바탕을 대표하고 남원의 상징으로 자리해온 <춘향가>를 바탕으로 새롭게 선보이는 국립민속국악원의 대표창극이다. 춘향가를 <서(序)·이별·그리움·신연맞이·수난·재회·어사출도·다시 사랑가>의 흐름으로 압축해, 익숙한 줄거리 재현보다 춘향의 내면과 감정선에 집중한 작품으로, 사랑과 이별, 기다림과 재회의 정서를 섬세하게 풀어낸다.
작품은 원전 사설을 바탕으로 하되 일부 새로운 사설을 더하고, 작창과 작곡, 서사적 무용을 결합해 전통 창극의 미학을 오늘의 감각으로 확장한다. “달빛 아래 매화 피어, 봄 향기 보내나니”로 시작하는 서(序), “여보 도련님 날 다려가오”의 이별, “하루 가고 이틀 가고”의 그리움, “갈까부다 갈까부네”의 수난, 그리고 어사출도와 다시 사랑가에 이르기까지, 춘향의 감정을 따라가는 장면들을 밀도 있게 엮는다.
이번 공연은 한국예술종합학교 연극원 배삼식 교수가 대본을 맡고, 중앙대학교 전통예술학부 한승석 교수가 작창을, 김 정 연출이 무대화를 맡아 완성도를 높인다. 설명적인 드라마 전개를 덜어내고 음악과 소리로 감정을 끌고 가는 구성으로, 한 편의 영화처럼 몰입해 감상할 수 있는 무대를 선보인다.
국립민속국악원(원장 김중현)은 “이번 <춘향>은 잘 알려진 고전을 단순히 재현하는 데 머무르지 않고, 춘향이라는 인물의 시선과 내면을 따라가며 그가 끝내 지켜내고자 했던 사랑의 의미를 담아낸 작품”이라며 “춘향의 도시 남원에서 국립민속국악원만의 미감과 해석으로 빚어낸 무대가 관객들에게 깊은 울림을 전하길 바란다”고 전했다.
주요 배역으로는 서진희가 춘향 역을 맡고, 고준석이 변학도, 김현주가 월매, 김정훈이 이몽룡으로 출연한다. 창극단·기악단·무용단과 객원진을 포함한 총 37명이 무대에 올라, 춘향가의 서사와 정서를 소리와 연주, 무용이 어우러진 입체적인 무대로 펼쳐낼 예정이다.
국악연주단(예술감독 유수정)은 “이번 <춘향>은 주인공과 조연, 코러스가 분리되는 방식이 아니라 무대에 선 모두가 각자의 역할 속에서 서사를 함께 만들어가는 작품”이라며 “극적인 장치를 덜어내는 대신 음악과 소리에 더욱 집중해, 관객들이 인물의 감정선을 따라 깊이 몰입할 수 있는 무대가 될 것”이라고 전했다. 또한 오는 7월 일본 오사카 공연도 예정돼 있어, 이번 예원당 공연은 국립민속국악원 대표창극 <춘향>의 해외 무대 확장으로 이어지는 출발점이 될 전망이다.
