Photographer Kim Ji-yeon's solo exhibition 'A Star's Child' will be held at the Seohak-dong Photo Art Museum in Jeonju from April 14th to May 3rd. The exhibition hours are from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm. The museum is closed every Monday.
This exhibition is gaining attention as the artist, who has consistently worked on photography based on the local community, presents the results of documenting alternative education sites.
The exhibition consists of photos and videos capturing the daily lives and growth process of students at the 'Geumsan Gandhi School' located in Chungnam. Over the course of a year in 2024, the artist traveled back and forth between Jeonju and Geumsan multiple times, visiting the school site directly. In addition to documenting classroom activities, the artist closely recorded various aspects of the children's daily lives such as gardening activities, sports events, dormitory life, and vacation preparations. Through interviews, she also captured their voices.
In particular, the artist accompanied the students on a pilgrimage across the country and joined them during a commemorative time visiting Pangmok Port in Jindo, capturing life experiences beyond the boundaries of education. These records go beyond simple school landscapes, providing a comprehensive view of the lives and emotions of adolescents growing within a community.
In this exhibition, along with the photo works, a 28-minute documentary video will also be screened. The video, created through the students' direct participation in subtitling during the filming process, edited by the artist, offers a different way to convey the vividness of the scene compared to the photos. Through this, visitors can experience a more expanded recording method combining images and videos.
Starting with the solo exhibition 'Jeong Misu' in 2002, Kim Ji-yeon has continued her work of documenting disappearing spaces and memories such as 'Modernization Company', 'Old Room', 'Meal for 3,000 Won', 'Nambu Gwangju Station', 'Hello, Gwangju Theater'. Through works like 'Let Go, See', exploring personal inner feelings, and 'Yeongsangang', capturing the history and life of the region, she has built her own photographic world. If '99 Hugs', her recent work, expanded towards a perspective on people, this exhibition further highlights the presence of individuals within a community.
This exhibition also questions the meaning of education in the context of the current era of regional extinction crisis. It reflects on the relationship between the region, education, and community by showcasing how children learn and live beyond the framework of public education in alternative school settings. Through this process, the artist aims to convey the message that 'each child is a presence like a star'.
During the exhibition period, a conversation with the artist is scheduled for April 25th at 3:00 pm, providing an opportunity for visitors to directly communicate with her. Additionally, this work will also be published as a photo book, which can be obtained as a signed copy at the exhibition venue. This exhibition, combining photos and videos, records and narratives, is expected to provide visitors with an opportunity to reconsider the meaning of education, life, and community.
공교육 너머의 상상력 기록한 사진전 '별 하나의 아이'전

사진가 김지연의 개인전 '별 하나의 아이'전이 오는 4월 14일부터 5월 3일까지 전주 서학동사진미술관에서 열린다. 관람 시간은 오전 10시 30분부터 오후 6시까지. 매주 월요일은 휴관.
이번 전시는 지역 기반 사진 작업을 꾸준히 이어온 작가가 대안교육 현장을 기록한 결과물을 선보이는 자리로 주목받고 있다.
전시는 충남 금산에 위치한 ‘금산간디학교’ 학생들의 일상과 성장 과정을 담은 사진과 영상 작업으로 구성됐다. 작가는 2024년 한 해 동안 전주에서 금산까지 오가는 길을 수차례 반복하며 학교 현장을 직접 찾아다녔다. 교실 수업은 물론 텃밭 활동, 운동회, 기숙사 생활, 방학 준비 등 아이들의 다양한 일상을 밀착 기록하고, 인터뷰를 통해 그들의 목소리까지 함께 담아냈다.
특히 작가는 학생들과 함께 국토순례 여정에 동행하고, 진도 팽목항을 찾아가는 추모의 시간에도 함께하며 교육의 울타리를 넘어선 삶의 경험을 카메라에 담았다. 이러한 기록은 단순한 학교 풍경을 넘어, 공동체 속에서 성장하는 청소년들의 삶과 감정을 입체적으로 보여준다.
이번 전시에서는 사진 작업과 함께 28분 분량의 다큐멘터리 영상도 상영된다. 영상은 촬영 과정에서 학생들이 직접 자막 작업에 참여하고, 작가가 편집을 맡아 완성한 결과물로, 사진과는 또 다른 방식으로 현장의 생생함을 전달한다. 이를 통해 관람객은 이미지와 영상이 결합된 보다 확장된 기록 방식을 경험할 수 있다.
김지연 작가는 2002년 '정미소' 개인전을 시작으로 '근대화상회', '낡은 방', '삼천원의 식사', '남광주역', '안녕하세요, 광주극장' 등 사라져가는 공간과 기억을 기록하는 작업을 지속해왔다. 또한 개인의 내면과 감정을 탐구한 '놓다, 보다', 지역의 역사와 삶을 담아낸 '영산강' 등을 통해 자신만의 사진 세계를 구축해왔다. 최근 작업인 '99명의 포옹'이 사람을 향한 시선으로 확장된 것이라면, 이번 전시는 그 흐름을 이어 공동체 속 개인의 존재를 더욱 깊이 있게 조명한다.
이번 전시는 지방 소멸 위기라는 시대적 배경 속에서 교육의 의미를 다시 묻는 전시이기도 하다. 공교육의 틀을 넘어선 대안학교 현장에서 아이들이 어떻게 배우고 살아가는지를 보여주며, 지역과 교육, 공동체의 관계를 성찰하게 한다. 작가는 이러한 과정을 통해 ‘아이 한 사람, 한 사람이 하나의 별과 같은 존재’라는 메시지를 전하고자 한다.
전시 기간 중에는 4월 25일 오후 3시 작가와의 대화가 마련돼 관람객과 직접 소통하는 자리도 이어진다. 또한 이번 작업은 사진집으로도 출간되어 전시장에서 사인본으로 만나볼 수 있다. 사진과 영상, 기록과 서사가 어우러진 이번 전시는 관람객들에게 교육과 삶, 그리고 공동체의 의미를 다시 생각해보는 계기를 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
