Artist Choi Kwang-seok, who has constructed a unique sculptural world based on Korean aesthetics and Eastern thinking, will hold his solo exhibition 'The Permeating Time of Unfading Things' at the Woojin Cultural Space from April 23 to 29.
This exhibition will focus on the artist's work world by combining traditional forms and modern sculptural language to visually express the accumulation of time and memory. Choi Kwang-seok has been exploring various expressive methods without sticking to a specific form, reinterpreting tradition with a contemporary sensibility to give it a contemporary meaning.
The exhibition will prominently feature Korean sculptural elements such as folk painting images, the structure of traditional clothing, the symbolism of the five traditional colors, and the physical properties of ink and water materials. Particularly, the work method of organically connecting flat and three-dimensional, screen and space stands out, showcasing sculptural experiments that transcend the boundaries between tradition and modernity.
A noteworthy element is the modern reinterpretation of the jeogori (traditional Korean jacket) form. The artist presents the jeogori not merely as a reproduction of traditional attire, but as a symbol compressing the life and emotions of Koreans. This form serves as a medium connecting the screen and space, refreshing the layers of memory and sensation for viewers.
Furthermore, the layers of colors repetitively piled on the screen and calligraphic brushstrokes do not present a complete image but reveal the process of accumulation and erasure. This method visually embodies the flow of time and depth of emotions, acting as an important sculptural language flowing throughout the entire artwork.
This exhibition transcends the boundaries between painting and installation, showing how tradition can be revitalized within modern sculptural language. Visitors are expected to experience the sensation of unfading memories following the traces of time accumulated in the artworks.
An exhibition official stated, "This exhibition showcases how traditional sculptural elements can be restructured within today's visual language," adding, "Through repetition, accumulation, and the properties of materials, the constructed works present a new sculptural space that goes beyond simple reproduction."

이번 전시는 전통의 형상과 현대적 조형 언어를 결합해 시간과 기억의 축적을 시각적으로 풀어낸 작가의 작업 세계를 집중 조명하는 자리다. 최광석은 특정 양식에 머무르지 않고 다양한 표현 방식을 탐색해오며, 전통을 단순히 재현하는 데 그치지 않고 오늘의 감각으로 재해석해 동시대적 의미를 부여해왔다.
전시에서는 민화의 이미지, 전통 의복의 구조, 오방색의 상징성, 먹과 수성 재료의 물성 등 한국적 조형 요소가 주요하게 다뤄진다. 특히 평면과 입체, 화면과 공간을 유기적으로 연결하는 작업 방식이 두드러지며, 전통과 현대의 경계를 넘나드는 조형적 실험이 돋보인다.
주목할 만한 요소는 저고리 형상의 현대적 재구성이다. 작가는 저고리를 단순한 복식의 재현이 아닌 한국인의 삶과 정서를 압축한 상징으로 제시한다. 이 형상은 화면과 공간을 연결하는 매개로 기능하며, 관람객에게 기억과 감각의 층위를 환기시킨다.
