On the 19th, in commemoration of the 66th anniversary of the April 19th Revolution, Namwon City held a memorial ceremony at the Kim Ju-yeol Memorial Park to honor the noble spirit of sacrifice of martyr Kim Ju-yeol.
The event was attended by Mayor Choi Kyung-sik of Namwon City, Governor Kim Gwan-young of North Jeolla Province, Member of Parliament Park Hee-seung, Chairman Kim Young-tae of the Namwon City Council, Director Shin Kyung-soon of the North Jeolla Eastern Regional Veterans Affairs Office, council members, family members of the deceased, representatives of organizations and social groups, officials from the Kim Ju-yeol Memorial Foundation, and around 200 residents.
The ceremony began with an introduction of Kim Ju-yeol's biography, followed by a memorial address, a performance by the Namwon City Traditional Music Orchestra, singing of songs related to the April 19th Revolution, paying respects at the gravesite and memorial altar.
Mayor Choi Kyung-sik stated, "We pay respect and gratitude to all those who dedicated themselves and sacrificed for democracy. We offer deep condolences to the families of the deceased. Let us forever remember martyr Kim Ju-yeol and the predecessors who sacrificed for the April 19th Revolution as symbols of freedom and peace by resisting injustice."
Namwon City has been holding annual ancestral rites on March 14th and commemorative events for the April 19th Revolution to honor the sacrifice of Kim Ju-yeol, who became the torchbearer of the revolution, and to uphold the spirit of democracy.
남원시, 제66주년 4·19혁명 기념식 개최
남원시가 4·19혁명 66주년을 맞아 19일 금지면 김주열 열사 추모공원에서 김주열 열사의 숭고한 희생정신을 기리는 기념식을 개최했다.
이날 행사에는 최경식 남원시장과 김관영 전북특별자치도지사, 박희승 국회의원, 김영태 남원시의회 의장, 신경순 전북동부보훈지청장, 도·시의원, 유가족, 기관·사회단체장, 김주열 열사 기념사업회 관계자, 주민 등 200여 명이 참석했다.
기념식은 김주열 열사 약력 소개를 시작으로 기념사와 추도사, 남원시립국악단 기념공연, 4·19의 노래 제창, 묘역 및 추모각 참배 순으로 진행됐다.
최경식 남원시장은 “민주주의를 위해 헌신하고 희생하신 모든 분들께 존경과 감사를 드리며, 유가족께도 깊은 위로의 말씀을 전한다”며 “불의에 항거하다 희생한 김주열 열사와 4·19혁명에 함께한 선대들을 자유와 평화의 상징으로 영원히 기억하자”고 말했다.
남원시는 4·19혁명의 도화선이 된 김주열 열사의 희생을 기리고 민주정신을 계승하기 위해 매년 3·14 제향과 4·19혁명 기념행사를 이어오고 있다.
