Painter Choi Ji-young, who is active in Jeonju, will hold her 19th solo exhibition 'Layers of Thought - Flow' from May 5th to 10th at Seohak-dong Photo Art Museum.
In this exhibition, the artist's world of work, which visualizes the accumulation and flow of time through the repetitive act of stacking layers of Hanji, is intensively showcased. The layers on the screen expand beyond simple formal elements into a way of perceiving and contemplating the external world.
In particular, this work was inspired by scenes of social turmoil and violence unfolding around the world. Tragedies in the US immigration crackdown process, sacrifices in the Iran protests, and the ongoing situation of war all presented the artist with a difficult reality to grapple with, which she expressed not by directly reproducing them but through performative work methods.
Through the process of folding and stacking Hanji, the artist continues her work in a meditative and prayer-like state. The screens formed through the movement of her hands and breath are smeared and spread, creating a flow, within which contemplation continues uninterrupted. Choi described this work as a way of "dwelling in the world through continuous actions rather than explaining it in words," stating that the layers are not just simple physical layers but points where external events and her own time intertwine.
The exhibition is structured into four flow units: 'Flow,' 'Fluidity,' 'Undulation,' and 'Smeared,' allowing visitors to move along the space and naturally experience changes in sensation and contemplation. The minimal explanation and the way it induces sensory immersion can also be seen as an attempt to extend the artist's working attitude into the exhibition composition.
Choi Ji-young graduated from Wonkwang University with a major in Korean painting and studied Hanji art at the Graduate School of Culture and Arts at Yewon Arts University. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Korean painting at Jeonbuk National University. She has been actively engaged in art activities, participating in 19 solo exhibitions and around 200 group exhibitions, including this exhibition.
This exhibition presents a form of continuous contemplation amidst the chaotic times, delicately revealing the sensibilities and inner flow of contemporary society through the traditional medium of Hanji. Visitors will immerse themselves in the layered screens and follow the flow of time, encountering the flow of contemplation in their own way.
한지의 겹으로 시대를 사유하다… 최지영 개인전 ‘겹의 사유 – 흐름’ 개최

전주에서 활동하는 화가 최지영 작가가 제19회 개인전 ‘겹의 사유 – 흐름(Layers of Thought – Flow)’을 오는 5월 5일부터 10일까지 서학동사진미술관에서 개최한다.
이번 전시는 한지를 겹겹이 쌓는 반복적 행위를 통해 시간의 축적과 흐름을 시각화해 온 작가의 작업 세계를 집약적으로 선보인다. 화면 위에 놓인 겹들은 단순한 조형적 요소를 넘어, 외부 세계를 인식하고 사유하는 하나의 방식으로 확장된다.
특히 이번 작업은 최근 세계 곳곳에서 벌어지고 있는 사회적 혼란과 폭력의 장면들에서 출발했다. 미국 이민 단속 과정에서의 비극과 이란 시위 속 희생, 그리고 지속되는 전쟁의 상황 등은 작가에게 감당하기 어려운 현실로 다가왔으며, 이를 직접적으로 재현하기보다 수행적인 작업 방식으로 풀어냈다.
작가는 한지를 접고 쌓는 반복의 과정을 통해 명상과 기도에 가까운 상태로 작업을 이어간다. 손의 움직임과 호흡 속에서 형성된 화면은 스미고 번지며 흐름을 만들어내고, 그 안에서 사유는 멈추지 않고 지속된다. 최 작가는 “이번 작업은 말로 설명하기보다 지속하는 행위를 통해 세계에 머무르는 방식”이라며 “겹은 단순한 물리적 층이 아니라 외부의 사건과 나의 시간이 포개지는 지점”이라고 밝혔다.
전시는 ‘흐름’, ‘유동’, ‘파동’, ‘스밈’ 등 네 개의 흐름 단위로 구성되어 관람객이 공간을 따라 이동하며 감각과 사유의 변화를 자연스럽게 경험하도록 한다. 설명을 최소화하고 감각적 몰입을 유도하는 방식 또한 작가의 작업 태도를 전시 구성으로 확장한 시도로 읽힌다.
한편, 최지영 작가는 원광대학교 한국화과를 졸업하고 예원예술대학교 문화예술대학원에서 한지미술을 전공했으며, 현재 전북대학교 대학원 한국화과 박사과정에 재학 중이다. 이번 전시를 포함해 개인전 19회와 200여 회의 단체전에 참여하며 꾸준한 작품 활동을 이어오고 있다.
이번 전시는 혼란의 시대를 통과하며 지속되는 사유의 한 형태를 제시하며, 한지라는 전통적 매체를 통해 동시대의 감각과 내면의 흐름을 섬세하게 드러낸다. 관람객은 겹겹이 쌓인 화면 속에서 스며들고 이어지는 시간의 결을 따라가며, 각자의 방식으로 사유의 흐름을 마주하게 될 것이다.
