More than 7 out of 10 upper-grade elementary school students are using generative AI, and 4 out of 10 find it difficult to stop using smart devices on their own, a recent survey revealed.
The National Teachers Union conducted a survey titled '2026 Children's Life and Thought Survey' targeting 2,804 students in grades 4 to 6 nationwide to mark the 104th Children's Day. The survey was conducted online from April 9 to 22, with a margin of error of ±2.09% at a 95% confidence level.
The results showed that nearly half of the children spend more than 2 hours using smart devices after school, with 16.5% of 6th graders exceeding 4 hours. The percentage of children spending over 4 hours alone on devices was 16.52%, higher than those with parental supervision.
Concerns were raised about the difficulty in stopping smart device usage, with 41.0% reporting experiences of finding it hard to quit due to issues like spending too much time or lack of focus on studies.
The use of generative AI was also prevalent, with 72.0% reporting using AI such as ChatGPT and Geminai, reaching 84.1% among 6th graders. The main purposes cited were asking questions and seeking help with studies and homework.
Children expressed concerns about AI use, worrying about receiving incorrect or strange answers and questioning the reliability. Only 21.2% confirmed directly verifying sources when judging the accuracy of online information, indicating a need for digital literacy education.
Responses indicating worries about over-reliance on smartphones, the internet, and AI stood at 33.1%, with concerns increasing as grade levels rose, reaching 38.9% among 6th graders.
Children's top desires included ensuring breaks and playtime (42.4%) and reducing academic pressure (42.0%). Additionally, demands for a safe environment free from school violence and adequate sleep were highlighted.
The National Teachers Union commented on the survey results, emphasizing the importance of returning play and rest to children overwhelmed by digital devices and excessive academic burdens, stating that social changes are needed to provide children with the basic rights of a daily life where they can sleep, play, and rest.
초등 고학년 72% “AI 사용”… 40%는 스마트기기 사용 조절 어려움

초등학교 고학년 어린이 10명 중 7명 이상이 생성형 AI를 사용하고 있으며, 10명 중 4명은 스마트기기 사용을 스스로 멈추기 어렵다고 느끼는 것으로 나타났다.
전국교직원노동조합은 어린이날 104주년을 맞아 전국 초등학교 4~6학년 2,804명을 대상으로 실시한 ‘2026 어린이 생활과 생각 조사’ 결과를 4일 발표했다. 조사는 지난 4월 9일부터 22일까지 온라인으로 진행됐으며, 표본오차는 95% 신뢰수준에서 ±2.09%다.
조사 결과 방과 후 하루 스마트기기 사용 시간이 2시간 이상인 어린이는 49.2%로 절반에 가까웠다. 6학년의 경우 16.5%가 하루 4시간을 넘게 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 혼자 시간을 보내는 어린이의 4시간 이상 사용 비율은 16.52%로, 부모와 함께 있는 어린이보다 높았다.
스마트기기 사용을 멈추기 어려웠던 경험이 ‘자주 있다’ 또는 ‘가끔 있다’고 답한 비율은 41.0%였다. 과사용으로 인한 불편으로는 ‘너무 오래 사용하게 됨’과 ‘공부에 집중이 안 됨’ 등이 꼽혔다.
생성형 AI 사용 경험도 높게 나타났다. ChatGPT, 제미나이 등 AI를 사용한다는 응답은 72.0%였으며, 6학년은 84.1%에 달했다. 주요 사용 목적은 ‘궁금한 것 물어보기’와 ‘공부·숙제 도움받기’였다.
AI 사용에 대한 우려도 확인됐다. 어린이들은 ‘틀린 답이나 이상한 답을 알려줄까 봐’, ‘믿어도 되는지 헷갈림’ 등을 걱정했다. 온라인 정보의 진위를 판단할 때 출처를 직접 확인한다는 응답은 21.2%에 그쳐 디지털 리터러시 교육 필요성이 제기됐다.
스마트폰·인터넷·AI 과의존을 걱정한다는 응답은 33.1%였다. 학년별로는 4학년 24.9%, 5학년 32.4%, 6학년 38.9%로 학년이 높아질수록 우려가 커졌다.
어린이들이 어른들에게 가장 바라는 것은 ‘쉬는 시간과 놀이 시간 보장’ 42.4%, ‘공부 부담 줄이기’ 42.0%였다. 이 밖에 학교폭력 없는 안전한 환경, 충분한 수면 보장도 주요 요구로 나타났다.
전교조는 이번 조사 결과에 대해 “어린이들이 진정 원하는 것은 거창한 이벤트가 아니라 자고, 놀고, 쉴 수 있는 일상의 기본권”이라며 “디지털 기기에 잠식되고 과도한 학업에 눌린 아이들에게 놀이와 쉼을 돌려주기 위한 사회적 변화가 필요하다”고 밝혔다.
