During the 96th Chunhyang Festival, a participatory program called the "Bangja Challenge" was planned to coincide with Children's Day and took place on the main street of the festival and the street play stage, garnering positive responses from citizens and tourists.
The newly introduced "Bangja Challenge" this year is an experiential program that reinterprets the character of 'Bangja,' a supporting character in the Chunhyangjeon, in a modern way. It drew attention for expanding the festival narrative centered around Chunhyang and Mongryong to include supporting characters.
During the event, activities such as the "Bangja Sock! Kuri Challenge," where two people throw shoes into a sock, and the "Bangja Pull-up Challenge," combining Bangja's strong physicality with exercise elements, were held. With simple rules and playful settings, participation from children, youth, and families of tourists continued.
Especially on Children's Day, children who visited the festival actively participated, experiencing the world of Chunhyangjeon through play. This program was evaluated as showing a shift from a "watching festival" to a "participatory festival," in line with the direction of the 96th Chunhyang Festival.
An official from Namwon City stated, "The Bangja Challenge is a program designed for families and citizens to laugh and enjoy together," adding, "We will continue to expand Namwon Chunhyang Festival's unique content by modernizing various stories from Chunhyangjeon."
Meanwhile, the 96th Chunhyang Festival, themed "Chunhyang's Charm, Enchanting the World," will continue until the 6th with various programs including performances, experiences, exhibitions, food, and night tours at Gwanghanruwon and Yeocheonbyeon.
남원 춘향제 어린이날 프로그램 ‘방자챌린지’ 성황
전통 캐릭터 재해석한 참여형 콘텐츠로 호응
제96회 춘향제 기간 중 어린이날을 맞아 기획된 참여형 프로그램 ‘방자챌린지’가 5일 춘향제 메인 거리와 길놀이무대 일원에서 시민과 관광객의 호응 속에 열렸다.
올해 처음 선보인 ‘방자챌린지’는 춘향전 속 감초 캐릭터인 ‘방자’를 현대적으로 재해석한 체험형 프로그램이다. 춘향과 몽룡 중심의 축제 서사를 조연 캐릭터까지 확장했다는 점에서 눈길을 끌었다.
이날 행사에서는 두 명이 한 팀을 이뤄 소쿠리에 신발을 던져 넣는 ‘방자 쏙!쿠리 챌린지’와 방자의 강인한 체력을 운동 요소와 결합한 ‘방자 풀업 챌린지’가 진행됐다. 간단한 규칙과 익살스러운 설정으로 어린이와 청년층, 가족 단위 관광객들의 참여가 이어졌다.
특히 어린이날을 맞아 축제장을 찾은 어린이들이 적극적으로 참여하며 춘향전의 세계를 놀이로 경험하는 시간을 가졌다. 이번 프로그램은 제96회 춘향제가 지향하는 ‘보는 축제’에서 ‘직접 즐기는 축제’로의 변화를 보여줬다는 평가다.
남원시 관계자는 “방자챌린지는 가족 관광객과 시민들이 함께 웃고 즐길 수 있도록 마련한 프로그램”이라며 “춘향전 속 다양한 이야기를 현대적으로 풀어내 남원 춘향제만의 콘텐츠를 확대해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
한편 ‘춘향의 멋, 세계를 매혹시키다’를 주제로 열리는 제96회 춘향제는 6일까지 광한루원과 요천변 일원에서 공연, 체험, 전시, 먹거리, 야간 관광 등 다양한 프로그램으로 진행된다.
