It has been revealed that 9 out of 10 elementary school students in Jeonbuk participate in after-school classes or private education after regular classes.
The Jeonbuk branch of the National Teachers Union announced the results of the '2026 Children's Life and Thought Survey' conducted on 1317 4th to 6th grade elementary school students in Jeonbuk to mark the 104th Children's Day. The survey was conducted online from April 21 to 27, with a sampling error of ±2.7% at a 95% confidence level.
According to the survey results, 90.1% of students participate in after-school classes or private education after regular classes. Furthermore, 11.2% of students reported participating in after-school classes or private education for more than 5 hours a day. 27.4% of students reported returning home after 8 p.m., with 33.1% of 6th graders stating they return home after 8 p.m.
The smartphone ownership rate was 93.9%, with 50.5% of students reported using smartphones for more than 2 hours a day. Additionally, 17.2% of students reported using smartphones for more than 4 hours a day.
Regarding playtime, 11.3% of students reported having no time to play on weekdays, while 29.3% reported a lack of playtime, showing a 6.5% increase from the previous year. When given time, the most desired activity was 'playing with friends,' with 56.7% of responses.
Overall life satisfaction was relatively high, with 85.3% of respondents stating they were satisfied with their lives. However, 11.4% responded that they were not happy, and 3.3% responded that they were unhappy. The average happiness index out of 10 was 7.70, showing a slight increase from the previous year but a tendency to decrease as the grade level increased.
The students' main concerns were studying/grades, friendships, appearance, and relationships with parents in that order. 52% of respondents had a positive outlook on the future, while 21.2% expressed worries, and 26.8% were unsure.
The Jeonbuk branch of the National Teachers Union stated that in open-ended responses, the most mentioned factor for students to become happier was 'playtime and free time.' They also highlighted the high demand for easing academic burdens, expanding break times, and increasing experiential activities.

전북 초등학생 10명 중 9명이 정규 수업 이후 방과후 수업이나 사교육에 참여하는 것으로 나타났다.
전국교직원노동조합 전북지부는 어린이날 104주년을 맞아 전북 초등학생 4~6학년 1317명을 대상으로 실시한 ‘2026 어린이 생활과 생각 조사’ 결과를 발표했다. 조사는 지난 4월 21일부터 27일까지 온라인 방식으로 진행됐으며, 표본오차는 95% 신뢰수준에서 ±2.7%다.
조사 결과 정규 수업 이후 방과후 수업이나 사교육에 참여하는 학생은 90.1%로 나타났다. 하루 5시간 이상 방과후 수업이나 사교육에 참여한다는 응답도 11.2%에 달했다. 귀가 시간이 8시 이후라는 학생은 27.4%였으며, 6학년의 경우 33.1%가 8시 이후 귀가한다고 답했다.
스마트폰 보유율은 93.9%였고, 하루 2시간 이상 스마트폰을 사용하는 학생은 50.5%로 조사됐다. 4시간 이상 사용하는 학생도 17.2%였다.
놀이 시간과 관련해서는 평일에 놀 시간이 없다는 응답이 11.3%로 나타났으며, 놀 시간이 부족하다는 응답은 29.3%로 지난해보다 6.5%포인트 증가했다. 시간이 주어진다면 하고 싶은 활동으로는 ‘친구들과 놀기’가 56.7%로 가장 많았다.
전반적인 생활 만족도는 비교적 높았다. 응답자의 85.3%가 생활에 만족한다고 답했지만, ‘즐겁지 않다’는 응답은 11.4%, ‘불행하다’는 응답도 3.3%로 나타났다. 10점 만점 행복지수 평균은 7.70점으로 지난해보다 소폭 상승했으나, 학년이 올라갈수록 낮아지는 경향을 보였다.
학생들의 주요 고민은 공부·성적, 친구 관계, 외모, 부모님과의 관계 순이었다. 미래에 대해 긍정적으로 생각한다는 응답은 52%였으며, 걱정된다는 응답은 21.2%, 잘 모르겠다는 응답은 26.8%로 조사됐다.
전교조 전북지부는 주관식 응답에서 학생들이 행복해지기 위해 가장 많이 언급한 것은 ‘놀 시간과 자유시간’이었다며, 학습 부담 완화와 쉬는 시간 확대, 체험활동 확대에 대한 요구도 높게 나타났다고 밝혔다.
