Culture and arts educator Seong Yumi, working at the Geumgwa Deul Sori Heritage Center in Suncheon County, won an encouragement award at the National Gugak Institute's sponsored competition for creating Gugak children's songs.
According to Suncheon County, Seong attended the award ceremony of the "40th National Gugak Institute's Gugak Children's Song Creation Competition" held at the Umyeondang of the National Gugak Institute in Seoul on the 30th of last month. She received the National Gugak Institute President's Award for her song "Where Did the White Rice Come From?" which she personally wrote and composed.
The award-winning piece, tailored to the perspective of children, expressed the sounds of the field passed down during farming in a modern melody, conveying the value of labor in a bowl of rice. Seong majored in geomungo at Chonnam National University's Department of Gugak and is currently pursuing a master's degree in cultural management and tourism at the same university. She has been active as an instructor for the Suncheon Youth Rainbow Gugak Orchestra and previously won the top prize in the instrumental general category at the 2024 Mokpo National Gugak Competition.
The award-winning song is included in the "Gugak Children's Songs Compilation Vol. 37," produced and made available through music services and the National Gugak Institute's Gugak Archives.
Culture and arts educator Seong Yumi said, "I was deeply moved by the vitality of our farming songs while participating in the Geumgwa Deul Sori transmission process," and added, "It is meaningful to be able to widely promote Suncheon's traditional agricultural cultural heritage."
순창 금과들소리전수관 성유미 씨, 국악동요 공모전 장려상
‘하얀 밥 어디서 왔니?’로 국립국악원장상 수상
순창군 금과들소리전수관에서 근무 중인 문화예술교육사 성유미 씨가 국립국악원 주최 창작 국악동요 공모전에서 장려상을 수상했다.
순창군에 따르면 성 씨는 지난달 30일 서울 국립국악원 우면당에서 열린 ‘제40회 국립국악원 창작 국악동요 작품 공모전’ 시상식에서 직접 작사·작곡한 ‘하얀 밥 어디서 왔니?’로 국립국악원장상을 받았다.
수상작은 모내기 과정을 어린이의 눈높이에 맞춰 풀어낸 곡으로, 농사일 속에서 전해 내려온 들소리를 현대적인 선율로 표현해 밥 한 그릇에 담긴 노동의 가치를 전달했다는 평가를 받았다.
성 씨는 전남대학교 국악학과에서 거문고를 전공했으며, 현재 같은 대학 대학원 문화경영관광 전공 석사과정에 재학 중이다. 순창 청소년 무지개 국악오케스트라 강사로 활동했으며, 2024년 목포전국국악경연대회 기악 일반부 최우수상을 수상한 바 있다.
수상작 음원은 ‘국악동요 선집 제37집’으로 제작돼 음원 서비스와 국립국악원 국악자료관을 통해 공개됐다.
성유미 교육사는 “금과들소리 전승 과정에 함께하며 우리 농요가 지닌 생명력에 깊은 감동을 받았다”며 “순창의 전통 농경문화유산을 널리 알릴 수 있게 돼 뜻깊다”고 말했다.
