Jeongeup City will host the 59th Donghak Peasant Revolution Commemoration Festival at Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Park from the 9th to the 11th of this month for three days.
This year's festival, with the slogan 'Once again, people are the sky,' is prepared to reflect on the spirit of equality for all pursued by the Donghak Peasant Army and to promote the independence spirit, aiming to introduce the identity of the revolutionary city of Jeongeup.
The event will kick off on the 9th with an official ceremony in the morning, followed by various programs such as the National Farmers' Music Competition, Youth Debate Competition, and Dance Competition.
Especially at 6 p.m. on the 9th, a procession called 'The Shout of That Day' will take place, with 511 participants including citizens, local farmers' music bands, youth, and cultural artists. Participants are expected to showcase a procession reenacting the spirit of the farmers' army in 1894 and a flash mob.
The venue will feature food and entertainment booths resembling a horse market, a citizen flea market called 'Moonlight Market,' street performances, and an evening landscape sculpture titled 'Journey to 1894,' providing experiential and cultural spaces.
Following the commemoration ceremony, congratulatory performances featuring Son Tae-jin, Jo Jazz, Monday Kids, and Kyungseo will be held, and on the 10th, performances by Huh Gak and Shin Dong-jae, as well as a special performance by Jeongeup City Traditional Music Orchestra titled 'Fate,' will follow.
Jeongeup Mayor Lee Hak-soo said, "I hope that the noble spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the value of people as the sky will be conveyed to the entire nation through this event," adding, "Jeongeup City will inherit and develop the revolutionary spirit."
정읍시, 9일부터 제59회 동학농민혁명기념제 개최
‘다시, 사람이 하늘이다’ 주제…진군행렬·공연·체험행사 마련
정읍시는 오는 9일부터 11일까지 사흘간 동학농민혁명기념공원 일원에서 제59회 동학농민혁명기념제를 개최한다.
올해 기념제는 ‘다시, 사람이 하늘이다’를 슬로건으로, 동학농민군이 추구했던 만민평등과 자주독립 정신을 되새기고 혁명 도시 정읍의 정체성을 알리기 위해 마련됐다.
행사는 9일 오전 공식 제례를 시작으로 전국 농악경연대회, 청소년 토론대회, 댄스 경연대회 등 다양한 프로그램으로 진행된다.
특히 9일 오후 6시에는 시민과 지역 농악단, 청소년, 문화예술인 등 511명이 참여하는 ‘그날의 함성’ 진군행렬이 펼쳐진다. 참가자들은 1894년 농민군의 기백을 재현하는 행렬과 플래시몹을 선보일 예정이다.
행사장에는 말목장터를 재현한 먹거리·볼거리 부스, 시민 플리마켓 ‘달빛장터’, 거리 공연, 야간 경관 조형물 ‘1894로의 여행’ 등 체험·문화 공간도 마련된다.
기념식 직후에는 손태진, 조째즈, 먼데이키즈, 경서 등이 출연하는 축하공연이 열리며, 10일에는 허각과 신동재의 공연, 정읍시립국악단 특별 기획공연 ‘천명’이 이어진다.
이학수 정읍시장은 “동학농민혁명의 숭고한 정신과 사람이 하늘이라는 동학의 가치가 이번 행사를 통해 전 국민에게 전해지기를 바란다”며 “정읍시는 혁명 정신을 계승하고 발전시켜 나가겠다”고 말했다.
