On May 9th, in preparation for Buddha's Day in the year 2570 of the Buddhist calendar, the spirit of compassion and the fragrance of practice filled the atmosphere at the Homeland Martyrs Shrine of the 35th Infantry Division of the Republic of Korea Army.
The memorial service for soldiers held at the Homeland Martyrs Shrine of the 35th Infantry Division of the Republic of Korea Army went beyond a simple condolence event, delivering profound teachings of Buddha's wisdom and peace to the young men safeguarding the nation.
On this day, the service was attended by Venerable Maisan and members of the Buddhist Volunteer Corps, who warmly extended their care and encouragement to around 300 soldiers.
The volunteers shared snacks such as monk’s stir-fried rice cakes, fried chicken, ramen, beverages, ice cream, and more, embodying Buddha's compassion. They also donated 1 million won as a temple offering, expressing deep gratitude for the soldiers' hard work.
The service proceeded with an opening ceremony, a Dharma talk by Venerable Maisan, performances to console the soldiers, and a closing ceremony. Venerable Maisan, the head monk, and Hyunjin, a director of the Buddhist Volunteer Corps, along with around 50 members, participated in the event.
On that day, Venerable Maisan emphasized the significance of practice in military life, centered around the teachings of the Four Noble Truths.
The monk stated, "Everyone experiences suffering in life, but wisdom arises when one understands the cause of that suffering and moves towards the right path." He added, "If the challenges of military life are embraced as part of the practice, it becomes a connection that strengthens oneself."
In response, Commander Kim Kwang-seok expressed deep gratitude to Venerable Maisan and the volunteers for sharing valuable teachings and warm encouragement with the soldiers. He vowed, "The soldiers of the 35th Division will do their best to fulfill their inherent duty of protecting the nation and its people."
One soldier who attended the service said, "There have been many moments in military life when it was difficult to steady my wavering heart, but today's Dharma talk brought me great comfort and peace." He added, "It was a precious time for self-reflection as Buddha's Day approaches."
The following performances after the service became a stage of harmony where practice and consolation intertwined. Hyunjin's vocal performance, along with singer Na Yul, the Raina Valley Dance Group, and the girl group Lady T, brought great joy and laughter to the soldiers.
An official from the Homeland Martyrs Shrine stated, "Conveying Buddha's teachings to the soldiers who protect the nation and providing them with a place of mental solace is an important role of military chaplaincy." They further mentioned, "We will continue to hold various services to nurture the soldiers' emotions and deepen their faith."
Buddha's compassion is not something distant; it blooms whenever someone consoles a weary heart, soothes a wavering mind, or looks warmly upon others.
The Dharma talk at the Homeland Martyrs Shrine on that day was indeed a profound moment where the flowers of compassion and practice blossomed in the hearts of the military soldiers.
마이산 탑사-붓다 자원봉사단, 제35보병사단 장병 위문법회
불기 2570년 부처님오신날을 앞둔 5월 9일, 육군 제35보병사단 호국 충경사에는 자비의 온기와 수행의 향기가 가득 퍼졌다.
대한민국 육군 제35보병사단 호국 충경사에서 봉행된 장병 위문법회는 단순한 위문 행사를 넘어, 나라를 지키는 청년들에게 부처님의 지혜와 평안을 전하는 뜻깊은 법석이었다.
이날 법회에는 마이산 탑사 와 붓다 자원봉사단 이 함께하며 장병 300여 명에게 따뜻한 정성과 격려를 전했다.
봉사단은 스님 떡볶이와 닭강정, 라면, 음료수, 아이스크림 등 정성껏 마련한 간식을 나누며 부처님의 자비를 실천했고, 법당 후원금 100만 원을 전달하며 장병들의 노고에 깊은 감사의 마음을 표했다.
이날 법회는 개회식, 진성스님 법문, 장병 위문공연, 폐회의 순서로 진행됐다. 법석에는 마이산 탑사 회주 진성스님과 (사)붓다 상임이사 현진스님, 이재현 (사)붓다 봉사단장과 봉사단원 50여 명이 동참했다.
진성스님은 이날 사섭법의 가르침을 중심으로 군 생활 속 수행의 의미를 전했다.
스님은 “삶에는 누구나 고통이 있지만, 그 괴로움의 원인을 바로 알고 바른 길로 나아갈 때 지혜가 열린다”며 “군 생활의 어려움 또한 수행의 과정으로 받아들인다면 자신을 더욱 단단하게 만드는 인연이 된다”고 설했다.
이에 김광석 사단장은 “장병들을 위해 귀한 법문과 따뜻한 격려를 전해주신 진성스님과 봉사단에 깊이 감사드린다”며 “35사단 장병들은 국가와 국민을 지키는 본연의 사명을 다하기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 화답했다.
법회에 참석한 한 장병은 “군 생활 속에서 흔들리는 마음을 다잡기 어려울 때가 많았는데, 오늘 법문을 통해 큰 위로와 평안을 얻었다”며 “부처님오신날을 앞두고 자신의 마음을 돌아보는 소중한 시간이 되었다”고 말했다.
법회 후 이어진 위문공연은 수행과 위로가 함께하는 화합의 무대가 되었다. 현진스님의 음성공연과 가수 나율, 라이나밸리댄스, 걸그룹 레이디티의 열정적인 무대는 장병들에게 큰 환희와 웃음을 선사했다.
호국 충경사 관계자는 “나라를 지키는 장병들에게 부처님의 가르침을 전하고 마음의 안식처가 되어주는 것이 군 포교의 중요한 역할”이라며 “앞으로도 장병들의 정서 함양과 신심 증장을 위해 다양한 법회를 이어가겠다”고 밝혔다.
부처님의 자비는 멀리 있는 것이 아니다, 누군가의 지친 마음을 위로하고, 흔들리는 마음을 다독이며, 서로를 따뜻하게 바라보는 그 순간마다 이미 연꽃은 피어나고 있다.
이날 호국 충경사 법석은 바로 그 자비와 수행의 꽃이 군 장병들의 마음속에 피어난 뜻깊은 시간이 되었다.
