As conflicts escalate surrounding urban nesting sites for egrets nationwide, efforts are being made to explore ecological solutions that allow humans and wildlife to coexist rather than simply driving the egrets away.
The Jeonbuk Environmental Federation, Daejeon Environmental Federation, and Cheongju-Chungbuk Environmental Federation will jointly host a citizen forum on the theme of "Our Attitude Towards Dreaming of Coexistence with Egrets" at 2 p.m. on the 11th floor of the Jeonbuk Provincial Council.
Egrets labeled as 'nuisance animals'... "Indicator species showing urban healthiness"
Residents near egret breeding sites across the country have been complaining about odors, noise, and excrement, leading to grievances. In some regions, conflicts have escalated to the point where extreme measures such as cutting down trees in egret habitats or forcibly driving them away are being considered.
However, environmental groups argue that the formation of egret breeding sites indicates the presence of abundant food resources and a stable breeding environment in the vicinity. Therefore, instead of simply dismissing egrets as 'wildlife causing complaints,' it is suggested that they should be recognized as an important 'indicator species' proving the healthiness of the urban ecosystem.
Preemptive management plans needed before conflicts surface in Jeonju
Currently, Jeonju has two major egret breeding sites, Geonji Mountain and Hyocheon District Egret Park.
Geonji Mountain breeding site is a large habitat where over 1,000 pairs breed. Despite being located in the heart of the city, egrets breed stably, making it highly valued for its ecological significance.
The Hyocheon District breeding site was nearly reduced due to residential development in the past, but by preserving the core habitat and securing buffer spaces (parks), a relatively stable balance has been achieved between residents' lives and egret habitats.
Unlike other regions, conflicts related to egrets have not fully surfaced in Jeonju yet. An environmental group official explained the purpose of this forum, saying, "Now is the time to properly evaluate the ecological value of breeding sites and proactively establish long-term conservation and systematic management plans before conflicts escalate."
This forum is expected to be a meaningful first step in declaring 'coexistence of humans and wildlife' rather than 'blind eradication' in response to the nationwide egret conflict issue.
‘인간과 백로 공존 생태적 해법 모색’ 토론회 개최
전국적으로 백로 집단번식지를 둘러싼 도심 속 갈등이 심화되는 가운데, 백로를 무조건 내쫓기보다 인간과 야생동물이 함께 살아갈 수 있는 생태적 해법을 모색하는 자리가 마련된다.
전북환경운동연합과 대전환경운동연합, 청주충북환경운동연합은 오는 11일 오후 2시 전북특별자치도의회 2층 의원총회의실에서 <백로와 공존을 꿈꾸기 위한 우리의 자세>를 주제로 시민토론회를 공동 개최한다.
‘민원 동물’ 낙인 찍힌 백로… “도시 건강성 보여주는 지표종”
최근 전국 곳곳의 백로 번식지 주변 주민들은 악취와 소음, 배설물 등으로 인한 고통을 호소하며 민원을 제기하고 있다. 일부 지자체나 지역에서는 갈등이 극에 달해 백로의 서식지 나무를 벌목하거나 인위적으로 쫓아내려는 극단적인 움직임까지 나타나는 실정이다.
그러나 환경단체들은 백로류의 집단번식지가 형성되었다는 것은 주변에 풍부한 먹이자원과 안정적인 번식 환경이 갖춰져 있음을 의미한다고 입을 모은다. 즉, 백로를 순순히 ‘민원 유발 야생동물’로 치부할 것이 아니라, 도시 생태계의 건강성을 증명하는 중요한 ‘지표종’으로 인식해야 한다는 지적이다.
전주시, 갈등 표면화 전 ‘선제적 관리 방안’ 마련해야
현재 전주시에는 건지산과 효천지구 백로공원 등 두 곳의 주요 백로 집단번식지가 자리 잡고 있다.
건지산 번식지는 1,000쌍 이상이 번식하는 대규모 서식지다. 도심 한복판에 위치하면서도 백로들이 안정적으로 번식하고 있어 생태적 가치가 매우 높게 평가된다.
효천지구 번식지는 과거 주거단지 개발로 서식지가 줄어들 뻔했으나, 핵심 서식지를 원형 보전하고 완충공간(공원)을 확보해 주민 생활과 백로 서식이 비교적 안정적인 균형을 이루고 있다.
전주는 아직 다른 지자체처럼 백로 관련 갈등이 전면적으로 불거지지는 않았다. 환경단체 관계자는 “갈등이 심화되기 전인 지금이 번식지의 생태적 가치를 제대로 평가하고, 장기적인 보전과 체계적인 관리 방안을 선제적으로 마련해야 할 적기”라며 이번 토론회의 취지를 설명했다.
이번 토론회는 전국적인 난제로 떠오른 백로 갈등에 대해 ‘맹목적인 퇴치’가 아닌 ‘사람과 야생동물의 상생’을 선언하는 의미 있는 첫걸음이 될 것으로 기대된다.
