The Jeonju World Sound Festival Organizing Committee (Chairman Choi Cheol) unveiled the outline of this year's festival and began full-scale preparations.
On the 16th, at the Korean Sound Culture Center, the committee held a program presentation, introducing this year's keyword, "The Breath of Sound, Gathered on a Stage," and the main lineup. The festival, in its 25th edition, will take place from August 12th to 16th for five days in various locations in Jeollabuk-do.
This year's festival aims to move away from the traditional structured opening and closing performances to focus on a stage where the audience and artists come together in harmony. In particular, the festival's flagship project, "Five Elements of Pansori," transforms into a three-stage format called "Pannoreum," combining traditional performances such as tightrope walking and lion dances, moving away from the traditional singing-centered approach. Renowned singers such as Jang Moon-hee, Song Jae-young, Wang Ki-seok, and the Yein Association 'In Cheonji' will participate, creating a massive participatory stage.
The lineup of domestic and international invited performances is also splendid. The Namwon City Orchestra will present a new musical drama based on the bestseller by author Jung Ji-ah, titled "Father's Liberation Diary." Performances such as Kim Sora's "Women's Farmers' Music" and the Gongchang Preservation Society's "Mandure Pungjanggut," reflecting regional colors, will follow. To ensure popularity, special stages by Jeonbuk CBS, Shim Soo-bong, and Urban Zakapa have been arranged.
The exchange with world music has deepened. The international collaboration project "Chopin & Arirang," which premiered in 2014 and received a great response, will return to the stage. Diverse world music, such as collaborations between a Canadian folk band and Korean singer Song Bong-geum, and the Malawian band Madalitso, will meet the audience. The distribution program supporting the overseas expansion of young Korean traditional musicians, "Sound Frontier," will also be diversified.
There are also notable plans to reach out to culturally marginalized groups. The "Sound Festival on the Go," which directly visits welfare facilities in 13 cities and counties, is already in operation. An arts education program for children is being conducted at the Palbok Art Factory. Street performances taking place in various urban areas, such as "Sound Fringe," will further enhance the festival atmosphere in places like Jeonju Hanok Village and Deokjin Park.
Chairman Choi Cheol stated, "In celebration of the 25th edition, we have prepared a diverse program that combines the authenticity of traditional music with a modern sensibility and a global perspective," and appealed for support. Executive Director Kim Jung-soo also expressed, "This year, we will return to the original playground where Pansori was born, the sound stage, to provide deep healing to the local residents."
25회 맞은 전주세계소리축제, ‘참여형 소리판’으로 돌아온다

전주세계소리축제조직위원회(조직위원장 최철)가 올해 축제의 밑그림을 공개하며 본격적인 준비에 돌입했다.
조직위는 16일 한국소리문화의전당에서 프로그램 발표회를 열고, 올해 키워드인 ‘소리의 숨결, 모아 판으로’와 주요 라인업을 소개했다. 25회차를 맞은 올해 축제는 8월 12일부터 16일(일)까지 5일간 전북특별자치도 일원에서 펼쳐진다.
올해 축제는 기존의 정형화된 개·폐막작 구조에서 벗어나 관객과 예술인이 함께 어우러지는 대동(大同)의 무대를 지향한다. 특히 축제의 간판 기획인 ‘판소리 다섯바탕’은 기존 완창 중심에서 벗어나 줄타기, 사자놀이 등 전통 연희가 결합된 3마당 형식의 ‘판놀음’으로 탈바꿈한다. 장문희, 송재영, 왕기석 등 명창들과 예인협회 ‘In 천지’가 참여해 거대한 참여형 무대를 완성할 예정이다.
국내외 초청 공연의 면면도 화려하다. 남원시립국악단은 정지아 작가의 베스트셀러를 원작으로 한 신작 창극 <아버지의 해방일지>를 선보이며, 김소라의 ‘여성농악’, 고창농악보존회의 ‘만두레 풍장굿’ 등 지역 색채를 담은 수준 높은 공연들이 이어진다. 대중성 확보를 위해 전북CBS와 공동 기획한 심수봉, 어반자카파의 무대도 마련된다.
세계 음악과의 교류도 한층 깊어졌다. 2014년 초연되어 큰 호응을 얻었던 국제 협업 프로젝트 ‘쇼팽&아리랑’이 다시 무대에 오르며, 캐나다 포크 밴드와 소리꾼 송봉금의 콜라보, 말라위 출신의 마달리초 밴드 등 다채로운 월드뮤직이 관객을 만난다. 신진 국악인의 등용문인 ‘소리 프론티어’와 우리 음악의 해외 진출을 돕는 유통 프로그램도 다각화된다.
문화 소외계층을 위한 한 걸음 더 다가가는 기획도 돋보인다. 13개 시·군의 복지시설을 직접 찾는 ‘찾아가는 소리축제’가 이미 가동 중이며, 팔복예술공장에서는 어린이를 위한 예술교육 프로그램이 진행된다. 도심 곳곳을 무대로 삼는 거리 공연 ‘소리 프린지’는 전주 한옥마을과 덕진공원 등에서 축제의 열기를 더할 예정이다.
최철 조직위원장은 “25회를 맞아 전통음악의 정통성에 현대적 감각과 세계적 시각을 더한 다채로운 프로그램을 준비했다”며 성원을 당부했다. 김정수 집행위원장 역시 “올해는 판소리가 태생한 본연의 놀이판, 소리판으로 돌아가 도민들에게 깊은 힐링을 선사할 것”이라고 전했다.
