The restoration work on the inner three gates of Jeonla Gamyeong has been completed, allowing the area to regain its past appearance.
Jeonju City announced on the 17th that it had finished the restoration of the traditional dancheong (decorative coloring) on the inner three gates of Jeonla Gamyeong, which symbolized local governance during the Joseon Dynasty.
The buildings in the Jeonla Gamyeong area were restored from 2017 to 2020, restoring the grandeur of the Joseon era, but the dancheong had not been painted, remaining in its natural state.
The city decided that the wood had dried sufficiently over time and began the dancheong restoration work on the inner three gates in April to protect the structures and preserve their cultural heritage value.
The dancheong restoration work this time focused on using traditional dancheong techniques with natural pigments and traditional adhesive called agyo to restore the historical and authentic aspects of cultural heritage.
The dancheong patterns were completed after consulting with the Jeonju Gamyeong Restoration Committee, incorporating elements such as the six-petal lotus flower head seen in the Jeonju area's government office buildings and the jar shape unique to Gyeonggijeon Hall to reflect regional characteristics.
The city expects that the restored dancheong will elevate the dignity of the buildings, while also contributing to the long-term preservation of cultural heritage by restoring the function of protecting the wood.
Furthermore, following the inner three gates, there are plans to sequentially conduct dancheong restoration work on the other buildings within the Jeonla Gamyeong area.
전라감영지 내삼문, 전통안료 사용한 단청 복원공사 완료
전라감영 내삼문에 대한 단청공사가 마무리되면서 과거의 모습을 되찾게 됐다.
전주시는 조선시대 지방통치의 상징이였던 전라감영의 내삼문에 대해 전통안료 단청 복원 공사를 완료 했다고 17일 밝혔다.
전라감영지 건물은 지난 2017년부터 2020년까지 복원돼 조선시대의 위엄을 되찾았으나 단청이 칠해지지 않은 자연 상태였다.
시는 시간이 경과하면서 목재가 충분히 건조됐다고 판단됨에 따라 지난 4월부터 부재를 보호하고 문화유산으로서의 가치를 보존하기 위해 내삼문 단청 공사를 추진했다.
이번 내삼문 단청 공사는 천연 안료와 전통 접착제인 아교를 사용한 전통단청기법으로 시공돼 문화유산 고유의 역사성과 진정성을 회복하는 데 중점을 뒀다.
단청 문양은 전라감영 전체 복원 위원회의 자문을 거쳐 완성했으며, 전주지역 관아 건물에서 보이는 단청 요소인 6엽 평연화 머리초와 경기전에서만 보이는 항아리 모양을 넣어 지역적 특징을 반영하였다.
시는 복원된 단청이 건축물의 품격을 높이는 동시에, 목재를 보호하는 기능을 회복해 문화유산의 장기적인 보존에도 기여 할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
또한 내삼문에 이어 나머지 전라감영지 내 건물에 대해서도 순차적으로 건물별 단청공사를 진행할 계획이다.
