The solo exhibition of calligrapher No Bok-hwan, titled 'Resonance of Memory, Taste of Time', is being held as a special exhibition at the Seoul branch of the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Art Museum until the 28th. Artist No Bok-hwan has been expanding his experience accumulated through Chinese calligraphy works into Hanji object works. By utilizing custom-made Jeonju Hanji and oil colors, he expresses the strokes of calligraphy in a three-dimensional way, unraveling memories of childhood and life experiences through materials and colors. The artist layers traces of memories and emotions accumulated in life on the canvas through the properties of Hanji and repetitive coloring processes.
Based on the spirituality of Chinese calligraphy and memories accumulated in life, the artist expresses personal experiences and traces of life through Hanji objects. Particularly inspired by memories of handmade noodles and knife-cut noodles made by his mother in childhood, he tears, twists, and sticks custom-made Jeonju Hanji, repeating the process to compose the artwork. By applying oil colors multiple times, he creates deep textures and colors, capturing memories of childhood and present life on the canvas.
The series 'Perception' (2025) and 'Coexistence' (2025) presented in this exhibition visualize traces of life and memories through Hanji. For the artist, Hanji is an important material that encapsulates memories and life experiences, and the layered Hanji and colors reveal traces of lived time and emotions, guiding viewers to confront their own memories in front of the artwork.
No Bok-hwan has been active in Chinese calligraphy for over 40 years, serving as the chairman of the Korean Calligraphy Association and currently working as a consultant.
서예가 노복환 개인전 ‘기억의 결, 시간의 맛’열려

서예가 노복환의 개인전 ‘기억의 결, 시간의 맛’이 28일까지 전북도립미술관 서울분관에서 대관전으로 열린다.
노복환 작가는 한문 서예 작업을 이어오며 쌓아온 경험을 한지 오브제 작업으로 확장해 왔다. 직접 주문 제작한 전주한지와 오일 색채를 활용해 서예의 필획을 입체적으로 풀어내며, 유년 시절의 기억과 삶의 경험을 재료와 색채로 풀어낸다. 작가는 한지의 물성과 반복적인 채색 과정을 통해 삶 속에서 축적된 기억과 감정의 흔적을 화면 위에 쌓아 올린다.
작가는 한문 서예의 정신성과 삶 속에서 축적된 기억을 바탕으로, 개인의 경험과 삶의 흔적을 한지 오브제로 풀어낸다. 특히 어린 시절 어머니가 만들어주던 수제비와 칼국수의 기억에서 착안해 주문 제작한 전주한지를 찢고, 꼬고, 붙이는 과정을 반복하며 화면을 구성한다. 여기에 오일 색채를 여러 차례 덧입혀 깊은 질감과 색감을 만들어내며, 유년의 기억과 현재의 삶을 화면 위에 담아낸다.
이번 전시에서 선보이는 〈느낀다〉(2025)와 〈공존〉(2025) 연작은 삶의 흔적과 기억을 한지를 통해 시각화한 결과물이다. 작가에게 한지는 기억과 삶의 경험을 담아내는 중요한 재료이며, 겹겹이 쌓인 한지와 색채는 살아온 시간과 감정의 흔적을 드러내며 관람객이 작품 앞에서 각자의 기억과 마주하도록 이끈다.
노복환 작가는 40여 년간 한문서예 활동을 이어오며 (사)한국서예협회 이사장을 역임하였으며, 현재는 고문으로 활동하고 있다.
