The Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art, in collaboration with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), will be hosting the exhibition 'Picasso Ceramics: A Summer in Vallauris' from October 10th to October 11th, 2026.
This exhibition will showcase around 90 ceramic works by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) from the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, along with archival materials. It will focus on the process of Picasso's sculptural language expanding into ceramics as a three-dimensional medium, going beyond his paintings, prints, and sculptures.
The 'MMCA Regional Companion' project, initiated by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2026, aims to spread art exhibitions, education, and diverse art content from museums concentrated in the capital region to the entire country. As part of the 'International Masterpieces Tour and Co-hosting' initiative, 'Picasso Ceramics: A Summer in Vallauris' was planned to introduce Picasso's ceramic works from the Lee Kun-hee Collection to domestic and international visitors.
This exhibition will introduce the process of Picasso's ceramic works combining painting, printmaking, sculpture, and three-dimensional thinking on the medium of ceramics, following the flow of 'studio-experimentation-model-concept' through four exhibition rooms.
The first room, 'The Beginning of Ceramics, Madoura Studio,' explores the starting point of ceramics and the studio environment. The second room, 'Touchable Painting,' delves into the transformation of two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional forms through clay drawings, relief and intaglio techniques, and experiments with glazes. The third room, 'Hot Summer Festival, Bullfight,' showcases the repetition and variation of sculptural forms through images of bullfighting and bullrings, connecting painting, printmaking, and ceramics. The fourth room, 'Overlapping Perspectives, Varied Forms,' examines how Cubist multiple perspectives and surrealistic transformations operate on the curved surfaces of ceramics. Additionally, the archive room will shed light on how Picasso was introduced and received in Korea through newspaper articles, magazine critiques, and domestic exhibition records.
Furthermore, in July and August, two programs will run concurrently to broaden the understanding of Picasso's ceramics. The lecture program will deepen the interpretation of the exhibition by connecting Picasso's ceramics to art history, contemporary ceramics, and the reception of Picasso in Korea. Additionally, in collaboration with the Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art's screening program 'JMA Film - Weekend,' two documentaries depicting Picasso and his creative process during the Vallauris period will be screened in the auditorium.
전북도립미술관, <MMCA 지역동행> ‘피카소 도예: 발로리스의 여름’개최
전북도립미술관은 국립현대미술관과 공동으로 2026년도 ‘MMCA 지역동행’ <피카소 도예: 발로리스의 여름 Picasso Ceramics: A Summer in Vallauris>을 오는 10일부터 10월 11일까지 개최한다.
이번 전시는 국립현대미술관 소장 이건희컬렉션 중 파블로 피카소(Pablo Picasso, 1881–1973)의 도예 작품 90여 점과 아카이브 자료를 선보인다. 회화·판화·조각을 넘나든 그의 조형 언어가 도예라는 입체 매체로 확장되는 과정을 집중적으로 조명한다.
‘MMCA 지역동행’사업은 수도권에 집중된 미술관의 전시·교육·다원예술 콘텐츠를 전국으로 확산하기 위해 국립현대미술관이 2026년 새롭게 추진하는 사업이다. 그 중 ‘국제명작전 순회 및 공동주최’의 일환으로 마련된 <피카소 도예: 발로리스의 여름>은 이건희컬렉션의 피카소 도예를 도내외 관람객에게 소개하고자 기획되었다.
이번 전시는 피카소의 도예 작업을 회화·판화·조각·입체주의적 사고가 도자라는 입체 매체 위에서 새롭게 결합되는 과정을 소개하며 ‘공방–실험–도상–개념’의 흐름을 따라 네 개의 전시실로 이어진다.
1전시실 「도예의 시작, 마두라 공방」은 도예의 출발점과 공방의 환경을, 2전시실 「만질 수 있는 회화」는 점토 위 드로잉과 음각·양각, 유약 실험을 통해 평면의 회화가 입체로 전환되는 과정을 다룬다. 3전시실 「뜨거운 여름 축제, 투우」는 투우사와 황소, 투우 경기장의 이미지를 통해 회화·판화·도자로 이어지는 도상의 반복과 변주를 보여주며, 4전시실 「겹쳐진 시선, 변주된 형태」는 큐비즘적 다중 시점과 초현실적 변형이 도자의 곡면 위에서 작동하는 방식을 살핀다. 한편 자료실에서는 피카소가 한국에 어떻게 소개되고 받아들여졌는지를 신문 기사와 잡지 비평, 국내 전시 기록 등 주요 아카이브를 통해 짚는다.
아울러 7~8월 중에는 피카소 도예의 이해를 넓히는 두 갈래의 프로그램이 함께 운영된다. 강연 프로그램은 피카소 도예를 미술사·현대도자·한국 수용사와 연결해 전시의 핵심 해석을 심화하는 자리로 총 4차례 예정되어 있다. 또한 전북도립미술관의 상영 프로그램 「JMA 필름 – 위크앤드」와 함께 발로리스 시기의 피카소와 그의 창작 현장을 담은 다큐멘터리 2편을 강당에서 상영할 계획이다.
