On the 6th, at the opening ceremony of the Saemangeum Reclamation Agriculture Research Center in the Saemangeum Agricultural and Livelihood Land 5th Sector, attendees including Lee Won-taek, the Governor of Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province, and Lee Seung-don, the Director of the Rural Development Administration, demonstrated smart farming technology with autonomous driving tractors.
Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 6th that they held the opening ceremony and commemorative symposium for the Saemangeum Reclamation Agriculture Research Center, the first public institution within the Saemangeum Agricultural and Livelihood Land.
In attendance at the event were Governor Lee Won-taek, Director Lee Seung-don, and Park Ji-won, a member of the National Assembly, as well as officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Saemangeum Development Agency, and Gimje City. The event proceeded with an unveiling ceremony, opening ceremony, inspection of the new building, demonstration of smart farming technology, and commemorative photos.
At the symposium held under the theme "Reclamation Agriculture, Inquiring about the Future of National Food Strategy," policy directions and public-private cooperation strategies for the agricultural utilization of reclaimed land were discussed. The symposium also included presentations on the development direction of reclamation agriculture, data-based research approaches, land utilization strategies by the Rural Development Administration, and smart farming technology.
The Saemangeum Reclamation Agriculture Research Center, located in the Saemangeum Agricultural and Livelihood Land 5th Sector, is a national research institution established with a budget of 20 billion won from 2022 to 2025. It consists of five research and ancillary facilities and a 100ha test cultivation site. The opening of this public institution after 17 years since the start of the Saemangeum Agricultural and Livelihood Land development in 2009 signals the beginning of the full-scale development of the 9,430ha agricultural land.
The center is tasked with developing crop cultivation techniques to overcome environmental constraints such as salinity and humidity unique to the Saemangeum Reclamation area, soil and water quality management strategies, and precise water and nutrient management techniques to be transferred to resident farmers. It plans to conduct research on farming management suitable for vast reclamation lands, soil fertility improvement methods, and establish a cooperative system between the government and private sector using smart farming technology.
Furthermore, it will evaluate agricultural environmental changes in each reclamation area, enhance cultivation technology information based on farming conditions, support export agriculture with smart farm greenhouse technology, and create a foundation for landscape agriculture utilizing various aspects of reclamation land.
With this opening, Saemangeum is expected to leap as a hub proving national food security, advanced agriculture, and regional development, verifying large-scale crop production and data-based smart farming on-site. It is anticipated to establish itself as a focal point for Saemangeum agriculture supporting stable cultivation techniques for selected environmentally optimized varieties, while also backing export agriculture.
Governor Lee Won-taek stated, "Expanding education and technical support based on the research outcomes of the center, I will work closely with the Rural Development Administration to make Saemangeum a center for K-Precision Agriculture and a K-Food export hub."
새만금 농생명용지 첫 공공기관 ‘간척지농업연구센터’개소

전북특별자치도는 새만금 농생명용지 내 첫 공공기관인 간척지농업연구센터 개소식과 기념 심포지엄을 개최했다고 6일 밝혔다.
이날 이 자리에는 이원택 전북자치도지사와 이승돈 농촌진흥청장, 박지원 국회의원을 비롯해 농림축산식품부·새만금개발청·김제시 관계자 등이 참석했다. 행사는 현판식과 개관식, 신축 건물 시찰, 스마트농업 기술 시연, 기념 촬영 등의 순으로 진행됐다.
이어 ‘간척지 농업, 국가 식량 전략의 미래를 묻다’를 주제로 열린 심포지엄에서는 간척지의 농업적 활용을 위한 정책 방향과 민관협력 방안이 논의됐다. 간척지농업의 발전 방향과 데이터 기반 연구 방안, 농어촌공사의 부지 활용 전략, 스마트농업 기술 등 현장 중심의 연구 성과도 발표됐다.
농생명용지 5공구에 들어서는 간척지농업연구센터는 2022년부터 2025년까지 국비 200억 원을 투입해 조성된 국가 연구 기관으로, 연구·부속시설 5개 동과 100ha 규모의 시험연구 재배지를 갖췄다. 2009년 새만금 농생명용지 착공 이후 17년 만에 처음 문을 연 공공기관이라는 점에서, 9,430ha에 달하는 농생명용지 개발이 본격 궤도에 오르는 신호탄으로 풀이된다.
센터는 새만금 간척지 특유의 염분·습해 등 환경적 제약을 극복할 작물 재배기법과 토양·수질 관리 방안, 물·양분 정밀관리 노하우를 개발해 입주 농가에 전수하는 임무를 맡는다. 대면적 간척 농지에 적합한 영농 관리와 비옥도 개선 방안을 연구하는 동시에, 스마트 영농기술을 활용한 작업 효율화와 민·관 협력체계도 구축할 계획이다.
아울러 간척지구별 농업환경 변동을 평가하고 영농 실태를 조사해 적합 재배 기술 정보를 고도화하며, 수출농업을 뒷받침할 스마트팜 온실기술과 간척지 다각적 활용을 위한 경관농업 기반 조성도 병행한다.
이번 개소로 새만금은 국가 식량안보와 첨단농업, 지역발전을 실증하는 거점으로 도약해 대규모 작물 생산과 데이터 기반 스마트농업을 현장에서 검증하는 무대가 될 것으로 기대된다. 환경에 최적화된 품종을 선발하고 안정적인 재배 기술을 고도화하는 한편, 수출농업을 뒷받침하는 간척지 농업의 구심점으로도 자리매김할 전망이다.
이원택 전북자치도지사는 “센터의 연구 성과를 토대로 입주 농업인들이 영농에 안정적으로 정착할 수 있도록 교육과 기술 지원을 넓혀가겠다”며 “새만금이 K-정밀농업의 중심지이자 K-푸드 수출허브로 도약할 수 있도록 농촌진흥청과 긴밀히 협력하겠다”고 말했다.
