The Alumni Association of Chonbuk University expressed strong regret at being excluded from the government's 'Republic of Korea's Three Major Leap Forward Mega Projects' plan.
In a statement released on the 7th, the Chonbuk University Alumni Association stated, "With semiconductors designated for Gwangju, AI data centers for the Chungcheong region, and Physical AI for the Yeongnam region, concerns are growing that Jeonbuk is once again being left out of the national strategic industry placement for the future."
The Alumni Association emphasized that "Jeonbuk possesses the national strategic space of Saemangeum and has the scalability to be linked with agriculture and life, future mobility, defense industry, and new energy industries," adding that "excluding Jeonbuk from being an advanced industry hub not only limits the region's future but also narrows the country's growth potential."
Furthermore, they stressed that Jeonbuk University has been selected as one of the 'Glocal Universities 30,' proving its regional innovation and future industry transition capabilities as a nationally designated university, and argued that the role of Jeonbuk University should be appropriately reflected in national mega projects and advanced strategic industry placements.
The Alumni Association urged the government to devise measures to address the controversy over Jeonbuk's exclusion, reflect the roles of Jeonbuk and Jeonbuk University in advanced new industries such as semiconductors, AI, and Physical AI, and propose a plan for the establishment of an advanced industry hub centered around Saemangeum.
They also emphasized that the upcoming policy known as the 'Establishment of 10 Seoul National Universities' should be pursued based on fair and objective criteria rather than political logic or formal regional distribution, and that the status and role of Jeonbuk University must be reflected.
Choi Byeong-seon, the President of the Chonbuk University Alumni Association, stated, "Jeonbuk should no longer be on the periphery of the national development strategy," and emphasized that "the government must make a responsible decision to clearly position Jeonbuk's potential and the capabilities of Jeonbuk University within the national growth strategy."
전북대 총동창회 “정부 메가프로젝트 전북 배제, 국가균형발전 후퇴”
전북대학교 총동창회가 정부의 ‘대한민국 대도약 3대 메가프로젝트’ 구상에서 전북이 배제됐다며 강한 유감을 표명했다.
전북대 총동창회는 7일 성명을 내고 “반도체는 광주, AI 데이터센터는 충청권, 피지컬 AI는 영남권 중심으로 제시되면서 전북이 또다시 국가 미래전략산업 배치에서 비켜난 것 아니냐는 우려가 커지고 있다”고 밝혔다.
총동창회는 “전북은 새만금이라는 국가 전략 공간을 보유하고 있고, 농생명·미래모빌리티·방위산업·에너지 신산업과 연계할 수 있는 확장성을 갖추고 있다”며 “전북을 첨단산업 거점에서 배제하는 것은 지역의 미래뿐 아니라 국가 성장 가능성도 좁히는 결정”이라고 지적했다.
또 전북대학교가 ‘글로컬대학 30’ 선정을 통해 지역혁신과 미래산업 전환 역량을 입증한 국가거점국립대라고 강조하며, 국가 메가프로젝트와 첨단전략산업 배치에서 전북대의 역할이 정당하게 반영돼야 한다고 주장했다.
총동창회는 정부에 전북 배제 논란에 대한 보완대책 마련, 반도체·AI·피지컬 AI 등 첨단 신산업에서 전북과 전북대 역할 반영, 새만금 중심의 첨단산업 거점화 방안 제시를 촉구했다.
아울러 향후 추진될 이른바 ‘서울대 10개 만들기’ 정책도 정치 논리나 형식적 지역 안배가 아닌 공정하고 객관적인 기준에 따라 추진돼야 하며, 전북대학교의 위상과 역할이 반드시 반영돼야 한다고 밝혔다.
최병선 전북대학교 총동창회장은 “전북은 더 이상 국가 발전전략의 변방이어서는 안 된다”며 “정부는 전북의 잠재력과 전북대학교의 역량을 국가 성장전략 속에 분명히 위치시키는 책임 있는 결단을 내려야 한다”고 강조했다.
