The National Gugak Center (Director Kim Joong-hyun) and the Osaka Korean Cultural Center (Director Kim Hye-soo) will jointly present the traditional Korean opera "Chunhyang" at the National Bunraku Theater in Japan on the 9th and at the Okinawa National Theater on the 13th.
This performance is part of the 'Touring K-Arts' project sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Arts Management Service. The National Gugak Center, located in Namwon, the birthplace of pansori, will tour Osaka and Okinawa to introduce the contemporary charm of Korean traditional performing arts to Japanese audiences.
In particular, the performance in Okinawa holds significant meaning as it is the first cultural event directly organized by the Osaka Korean Cultural Center outside the Kansai region. By expanding its activities to Okinawa, the cultural center, which has been promoting Korean culture mainly in Osaka and the Kansai region, is laying the foundation for new cultural exchanges connecting different regions.
The Okinawa performance is expected to be attended by important figures in Japanese traditional arts, including the holder of the Japanese national important intangible cultural asset Gumi Odori and Ryukyu dance, as well as the artistic director of the Okinawa National Theater and traditional artists from various factions in Japan. It is anticipated to be a rare opportunity for Korean pansori and traditional performing arts officials to gather and exchange ideas.
The Osaka performance will also be attended by officials from the Independent Administrative Institution Japan Arts Council, the director of the National Bunraku Theater, and the secretary-general of the Bunraku Association. It is hoped that this stage will lead to an expansion of cultural exchanges between the two countries' traditional arts scenes and pave the way for future collaborations.
The performance "Chunhyang" is a representative traditional Korean opera newly produced by the National Gugak Center based on one of the five fundamental pansori stories, "Chunhyangga." Premiered in Namwon in April, the production focuses on Chunhyang's perspective and inner emotions, depicting love, separation, longing, suffering, and reunion in a dense and profound manner.
The script for the play was written by Professor Bae Sam-sik from the Korean National University of Arts, the composition was done by Professor Han Seung-seok from the Department of Traditional Arts at Chung-Ang University, and the staging was directed by Kim Jung. By compressing the long narrative of "Chunhyangga" into sections like 'Prologue, Separation, Longing, Welcoming the New Year, Suffering, Reunion, Farewell, and Love Song,' and combining the unique sound and breathing of pansori with music and dance, the production presents Chunhyang's emotional journey in a multidimensional way.
창극 ‘춘향’, 오사카·오키나와 국립극장 무대 오른다
국립민속국악원(원장 김중현)과 주오사카한국문화원(원장 김혜수)은 공동으로 오는 9일 일본 국립분라쿠극장과 13일 국립극장 오키나와 대극장에서 창극 「춘향」을 선보인다.
이번 공연은 문화체육관광부와 한국국제문화교류진흥원이 후원하는 ‘투어링 케이-아츠(Touring K-Arts)’ 사업의 일환으로 마련됐다. 판소리의 본고장인 전북 남원에 자리한 국립민속국악원이 오사카와 오키나와를 순회하며 한국 전통공연예술의 동시대적 매력을 일본 관객에게 소개한다.
특히 오키나와 공연은 주오사카한국문화원이 간사이 지역을 벗어난 지역에서 직접 주최하는 첫 문화행사라는 점에서 의미가 크다. 그동안 오사카와 간사이를 중심으로 한국문화를 알려 온 문화원이 오키나와까지 활동 범위를 넓혀 지역과 지역을 잇는 새로운 문화교류의 기반을 마련한다.
오키나와 공연에는 일본 국가 지정 중요무형문화재인 구미오도리와 류큐무용의 보유자를 비롯해 국립극장 오키나와 예술감독과 일본의 여러 유파에서 활동하는 전통예술인들이 관람할 예정이다. 한국의 판소리·창극과 오키나와 전통공연예술 관계자들이 한 자리에 모여 교류하는 매우 드문 기회가 될 것으로 보인다.
오사카 공연에도 독립행정법인 일본예술문화진흥회 이사와 국립분라쿠극장장, 공익재단법인 분라쿠협회 사무국장 등 일본 전통공연예술 기관 관계자들이 참석할 예정이다. 이번 무대를 계기로 양국 전통예술계의 교류가 확대되고 향후 다양한 협력으로 이어질 것으로 기대된다.
공연작 「춘향」은 판소리 다섯 바탕 가운데 하나인 「춘향가」를 바탕으로 국립민속국악원이 새롭게 제작한 대표 창극이다. 본 작품은 지난 4월 남원에서 초연했으며 익숙한 줄거리의 재현이 아닌 춘향의 시선과 내면에 집중해 사랑과 이별, 기다림과 수난, 재회의 정서를 밀도 있게 그려낸다.
한국예술종합학교 연극원 배삼식 교수가 대본을, 중앙대학교 전통예술학부 한승석 교수가 작창을 맡았으며 연출가 김정이 무대화했다. 긴 「춘향가」의 서사를 ‘서(序)·이별·그리움·신연맞이·수난·재회·어사출도·다시 사랑가’로 압축하고, 판소리 특유의 소리와 호흡에 음악과 무용을 결합해 춘향의 감정선을 입체적으로 펼쳐낸다.
