The book talk event for the new book "Walking through South Korea," which encapsulates the sacred journey of the first pedestrian travel group in South Korea, the nonprofit organization "Our Land Walking," over the past 40 years, was held on the 15th at the book cafe "Shinjeongil's Seoga" in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, amid the enthusiastic support of members and readers.
The newly introduced book "Walking through South Korea" summarizes the historical journey of exploring the history, culture, and beauty of the Korean land that the organization has consistently embarked on for 40 years, starting from the winter of 1985 as the "Hwangtohyeon Cultural Research Institute" until changing its name to the nonprofit organization "Our Land Walking" in 2005.
The book, written by poet and writer Maeng Han-seung, directly interviewed the members of Our Land Walking and revisited the significant footsteps left by the organization, discussing the path forward. It has been praised as a "sincere self-portrait of Our Land Walking" for vividly capturing the living identity of the organization.
The event delved deeply into the unique achievements the organization has made over the past 40 years and the profound influence it has had on the pedestrian culture in South Korea. Our Land Walking planned and walked the first "Top 10 Rivers Exploration in Korea," walking from the source to the estuary of the Han River, Nakdong River, Geum River, Seomjin River, and Yeongsan River.
Furthermore, they walked historical old roads to restore them, such as the Yeongnam Road from Busan to Seoul, Samnam Road from Haenam to Seoul, and Gwandong Road connecting Heunginjimun in Seoul to Pyeonghae in Uljin, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Particularly, after walking along the East Sea coast from Busan to Gangwon's Goseong Unification Observatory and proposing it to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the "Haeparang Trail," which is now the most popular trail among the nation, was created. Based on this, the national integrated walking trail "Korea Dulegil" connecting the West Sea coast, South Sea coast, and the Armistice Line was completed.
Moreover, they took the lead in pioneering the Sobaeksan Mountain Trail, Byeonsan Masil Trail, and Jeonju Millennium High Road, and played a significant role in transitioning the Ministry of Education's school trip system into today's "on-site experiential learning" paradigm.
Our Land Walking's footsteps evolved into a movement beyond simple travel to erecting historical landmarks. They deeply reexamined movements like finding the old names of Jeonju and shedding light on the Donghak Peasant Revolution, leading to the construction of commemorative monuments for leaders of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, General Kim Gaenam and General Son Hwajung, in Deokjin Park in Jeonju.
They also contributed to reevaluating the distorted historical event of the Gicheok Oksa Incident and assisted in creating the Jeong Yeolip Park at the birthplace of Jeong Yeolip in Sanggwan-myeon, Wanju-gun, and designating a road in Jeonju Innovation City as "Jeong Yeolip Road."
Furthermore, they proved the historical value of old roads facing destruction, such as the Mungyeong Saejae, Galjae connecting Jeongeup and Jangseong, Nuritjae connecting Yeongnam and Gangjin, Yangpyeong Gujilhyeon, and Changnyeong Namjibyeorigil, by proposing them for designation as national scenic spots to the Cultural Heritage Administration, leaving a significant mark on the preservation of cultural heritage.
The memories of the brilliant cultural movements led by the organization were shared during the event, evoking deep reflections among the attendees.
Participants reminisced about various events such as "Conversations with Poets" held with Kim Yong-taek, An Do-hyun, Baek Hak-gi, Kim Jun-tae, and poet Jung Yang in 1986, the "Summer Poet Camp" held from 1986 to 1988 in Byeonsan and Seomjin River, the "Summer Cultural Square" that opened literary and academic discussions from 1989 to 2004, and the "Southern Journey" that deepened Korean geography and humanities. The activities of the Jeolla Traditional Customs Preservation Society (Yang Jin-sung) and the historical figures and intellectuals who breathed on the road were introduced like a lantern.
A member who participated in the book talk expressed, "It was truly a great fortune and blessing that for over forty years, many people could share the hidden historical truths and beauty of our land on this path from 1985 to 2026."
Shin Jeong-il, the chairman of Our Land Walking, stated, "The footsteps of Our Land Walking, which write history on the road and open the future through the path, are expected to provide deep resonance and new milestones to many in the future through the new book 'Walking through South Korea.'"
국토의 속살과 역사를 걸어온 40년… (사)우리땅 걷기, 신간 <대한민국을 걷다> 북 토크 전주서 성황리 개최
대한민국 최초의 도보 여행 단체인 사단법인 ‘우리땅 걷기’가 걸어온 지난 40년의 거룩한 여정을 총망라한 신간 <대한민국을 걷다>의 북 토크가 15일 전주 덕진구에 위치한 북카페 ‘신정일의 서가’에서 도반들과 독자들의 뜨거운 성원 속에 열렸다.
이번에 선보인 <대한민국을 걷다>는 1985년 겨울 ‘황토현문화연구소’로 출발해 2005년 사단법인 ‘우리땅 걷기’로 명칭을 변경하기까지, 40년 동안 한결같이 대한민국의 역사와 문화, 국토의 아름다움을 찾아 떠났던 길 위의 지난한 역사를 집대성한 책이다.
시인이자 작가인 맹한승 씨가 집필을 맡아 우리땅 걷기 길동무(도반)들을 직접 인터뷰하고, 단체가 남긴 굵직한 발자취를 되짚으며 앞으로 나아갈 길을 논했다. 단체의 살아있는 정체성을 생생하게 담아냈다는 점에서 ‘우리땅 걷기의 진솔한 자화상’이라는 평가를 받고 있다.
■ 국내 최초 10대 강·옛길 답사… 국민의 길 ‘코리아 둘레길’을 만들다
이날 북 토크에서는 지난 40년간 단체가 일구어낸 독보적인 성과와 대한민국 도보 문화에 끼친 영향력이 심도 있게 다뤄졌다. 우리땅 걷기는 대한민국 최초로 ‘한국의 10대 강 답사’를 기획해 한강, 낙동강, 금강, 섬진강, 영산강을 발원지부터 하구까지 직접 두 발로 걸어 종주했다.
또한 역사 속 옛길을 복원하기 위해 부산에서 서울까지의 영남대로, 해남에서 서울까지의 삼남대로, 서울 흥인지문에서 경북 울진 평해를 잇는 관동대로를 걸었다. 특히 부산에서 강원 고성 통일전망대까지 이르는 동해바닷가를 종주한 후 문화체육관광부에 제안하여 만든 길이 오늘날 전 국민이 가장 걷고 싶어 하는 ‘해파랑길’이다. 이를 토대로 서해안, 남해안, 휴전선 길을 하나로 연결한 국토 통합 도보길 ‘코리아 둘레길’이 완성될 수 있었다.
이외에도 소백산 자락길, 변산 마실길, 전주 천년고도 옛길의 개척을 주도했으며, 교육부 수학여행 제도를 오늘날의 ‘현장 체험학습’ 형태로 패러다임을 전환하는 데 지대한 역할을 담당했다.
■ 역사 재조명과 문화 보존… 길 위에서 찾은 민족의 기개
우리땅 걷기의 발걸음은 단순한 여행을 넘어 역사 바로 세우기 운동으로 이어졌다. 전주의 옛 이름 찾기 운동을 비롯해 동학농민혁명을 깊이 있게 재조명하였으며, 그 결실로 동학농민혁명의 지도자인 김개남 장군과 손화중 장군의 추모비를 전주 덕진공원에 건립했다.
또한 조선 최대의 역모 사건으로 왜곡되었던 기축옥사(정여립 사건)를 재평가해 완주군 상관면 정여립 생가 터에 정여립 공원을 조성하는 데 일조했고, 전주 혁신도시에 ‘정여립로’라는 도로명을 제정하는 데 기여했다.
여기에 그치지 않고 문경새재, 정읍과 장성을 잇는 갈재, 영남과 강진을 잇는 누릿재, 양평 구질현, 창녕 남지벼리길 등 훼손 위기에 처한 옛길들의 역사적 가치를 입증해 국가유산청에 명승 지정을 제안, 국가 명승으로 지정시키는 등 문화유산 보존에도 큰 발자국을 남겼다.
■ 시대의 지성들과 함께한 길 위의 예술 문화 운동
이날 행사에 참석한 이들은 단체가 이끌어온 찬란했던 문화 운동의 기억을 공유하며 깊은 감회에 젖기도 했다.
▲1986년 당시 김용택, 안도현, 백학기, 김준태, 정양 시인 등과 함께했던 ‘시인과의 대화’ ▲1986년부터 1988년까지 변산과 섬진강에서 문학의 낭만을 나눈 ‘여름시인 캠프(도종환, 박남준 등 참여)’ ▲1989년부터 2004년까지 문학과 학술의 장을 열었던 ‘여름문화마당(김남주, 신경림, 정희성, 김원일, 김하기, 이태호, 김진경 등)’ ▲한국 지리학과 인문학의 깊이를 더한 ‘남녘기행(최창조, 윤정모, 인병선, 조용헌, 이덕일 등)’ ▲전라세시풍속보존회(양진성)의 전통문화 보존 활동 등 시대의 지성들과 길 위에서 호흡했던 역사들이 주마등처럼 소개됐다.
북 토크에 참여한 한 회원은 "1985년부터 2026년까지 사십여 년 동안 수많은 사람들이 이 길 위에서 우리 국토의 아름다운 속살과 숨겨진 역사적 진실을 공유할 수 있었던 것은 참으로 거대한 행운이자 축복이었다"고 소회를 밝혔다.
신정일 우리땅 걷기 이사장은 “길 위에서 역사를 쓰고, 길을 통해 미래를 열어가는 사단법인 우리땅 걷기의 발걸음은 이번 신간 <대한민국을 걷다>를 통해 앞으로도 수많은 이들에게 깊은 울림과 새로운 이정표를 제시할 것으로 기대된다”고 말했다.
