EBS has selected Herman Melville's novel "Moby Dick" as the ninth work for its humanities program "AI Classics, 100 Books that Changed History," which will be broadcast on EBS 1TV on weekdays from July 20th to the 31st at 12:05 AM.
This episode of "Moby Dick" is divided into 10 parts, each lasting 15 minutes, and was supervised by Professor Jang Ki-yoon from the English Literature Department at Sogang University. The program is produced in a way that interprets the work from the perspective of Ishmael, the sole survivor, based on the atmosphere of the New Bedford Harbor and the whaling ship Pequod recreated using AI technology from the 1840s in the United States.
"Moby Dick" is a maritime literary work published in 1851, depicting Captain Ahab's revenge and downfall towards the white whale Moby Dick. Although it did not receive much attention at the time of its publication, it has been recognized for its symbolism and philosophical depth since the 20th century, and is evaluated as a representative classic of American literature.
In this broadcast, EBS will explore not only the adventure narrative but also the major questions posed by the work such as fate and free will, human and nature, obsession and downfall. Particularly, they will divide and introduce the major scenes of the original work, such as the friendship between Ishmael and Queequeg, Captain Ahab's obsession, and the voyage and sinking of the Pequod, into 10 parts.
The broadcast will start on July 20th with "Call me Ishmael" and continue until July 31st with "I only am escaped alone to tell thee." After the broadcast, it will be available for viewing again on the EBS website.
EBS, ‘AI 고전, 역사를 바꾼 100책’ 모비 딕 편 방송
EBS는 인문교양 프로그램 ‘AI 고전, 역사를 바꾼 100책’의 아홉 번째 작품으로 허먼 멜빌의 소설 《모비 딕》을 선정해 오는 7월 20일부터 31일까지 평일 밤 12시 5분 EBS 1TV에서 방송한다.
이번 ‘모비 딕’ 편은 편당 15분, 총 10편으로 구성됐으며, 장기윤 서강대 영문학부 교수가 감수에 참여했다. 프로그램은 AI 기술로 재현한 1840년대 미국 뉴베드퍼드 항구와 포경선 피쿼드호의 분위기를 바탕으로, 유일한 생존자인 이스마엘의 시선에서 작품을 해설하는 방식으로 제작됐다.
《모비 딕》은 1851년 출간된 해양문학 작품으로, 흰 고래 모비 딕을 향한 에이해브 선장의 복수와 파멸을 그린 소설이다. 출간 당시에는 큰 주목을 받지 못했지만, 20세기 이후 상징성과 철학적 깊이를 인정받으며 미국 문학을 대표하는 고전으로 평가받고 있다.
EBS는 이번 방송에서 모험 서사뿐 아니라 운명과 자유의지, 인간과 자연, 집착과 파멸 등 작품이 던지는 주요 질문을 함께 다룰 예정이다. 특히 이스마엘과 퀴퀘그의 우정, 에이해브 선장의 집착, 피쿼드호의 항해와 침몰 등 원작의 주요 장면을 10강으로 나눠 소개한다.
방송은 7월 20일 ‘제 이름을 이스마엘이라고 해둡시다’를 시작으로, 31일 ‘저만 홀로 살아남아 당신께 아룁니다’까지 이어진다. 방송 이후에는 EBS 홈페이지를 통해 다시 볼 수 있다.
