The National Gugak Center (Director Kim Jung-hyun) successfully completed a tour of performances in two cities in Japan, following a performance at the National Bunraku Theater in Osaka on July 9 and at the Okinawa National Theater on the 13th, where they presented the traditional Korean opera "Chunhyang."
The Osaka performance attracted 705 audience members, while the Okinawa performance had 565 attendees, totaling 1,270 viewers. The seat occupancy rates were 97.4% in Osaka and 94.6% in Okinawa, averaging at 96.1%, confirming the overseas competitiveness of the National Gugak Center's representative opera "Chunhyang."
This tour was jointly organized by the National Gugak Center and the Korean Cultural Center in Osaka, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korea Arts Management Service as part of the 'Touring K-Arts' project. The opera "Chunhyang," produced in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, the birthplace of Chunhyang, was staged at the National Theater in Japan to introduce the charm of Korean opera and expand the scope of cultural exchange between Korea and Japan in traditional performing arts.
"Chunhyang" is a representative opera newly produced by the National Gugak Center based on one of the five main stories of pansori, "Chunhyangga." First presented in Namwon in April this year, the production focuses on Chunhyang's perspective and inner emotions, depicting love, separation, waiting, suffering, and reunion with depth without lingering on the familiar plot.
The script was written by Bae Sam-sik, a professor at the Korea National University of Arts, the composition was done by Han Seung-seok, a professor at Chung-Ang University's Department of Traditional Arts, and directed by Kim Jung. By combining the unique sounds and breathing of pansori with instrumental music and dance, the production presented Chunhyang's emotional journey in a multidimensional way, providing Japanese subtitles to allow local audiences to naturally follow the story and emotions of the work.
민속국악원 창극 〈춘향〉, 일본 국립극장 객석 가득 채워
국립민속국악원(원장 김중현)은 지난 7월 9일 일본 오사카 국립분라쿠극장에 이어 13일에는 국립극장 오키나와 대극장에서 창극 〈춘향〉을 선보이며 일본 2개 도시 순회공연을 성황리에 마쳤다.
오사카 공연에는 705명, 오키나와 공연에는 565명이 찾아 총 관람객은 1,270명으로 집계됐다. 객석 점유율은 오사카 97.4%, 오키나와 94.6%로, 전체 96.1%를 기록하며 국립민속국악원 대표창극 〈춘향〉의 해외 경쟁력을 확인했다.
이번 순회공연은 국립민속국악원과 주오사카한국문화원이 공동 주최하고, 문화체육관광부와 한국국제문화교류진흥원이 후원하는 ‘투어링 케이-아츠(Touring K-Arts)’ 사업의 하나로 마련됐다. 춘향의 고장 전북 남원에서 제작한 창극 〈춘향〉이 일본 국립극장 무대에 올라 한국 창극의 매력을 알리고, 한일 전통공연예술 교류의 폭을 넓혔다.
〈춘향〉은 판소리 다섯 바탕 가운데 하나인 〈춘향가〉를 바탕으로 국립민속국악원이 새롭게 제작한 대표창극이다. 올해 4월 남원에서 처음 선보인 작품으로, 익숙한 줄거리를 재현하는 데 머무르지 않고 춘향의 시선과 내면에 집중해 사랑과 이별, 기다림과 수난, 재회의 정서를 밀도 있게 그려냈다.
배삼식 한국예술종합학교 연극원 교수가 대본을, 한승석 중앙대학교 전통예술학부 교수가 작창을 맡았으며, 김정 연출이 무대화했다. 판소리 특유의 소리와 호흡에 기악과 무용을 결합해 춘향의 감정선을 입체적으로 펼쳐냈으며, 일본어 자막을 제공해 현지 관객들이 작품의 이야기와 정서를 자연스럽게 따라갈 수 있도록 했다.
