The Special Headquarters for LGBTQ Election Strategies, operated by the Labor Party in conjunction with the 9th National Simultaneous Local Elections, has officially concluded its activities.
On the 20th, the Labor Party's LGBTQ Committee held a closing ceremony at the 'Leftist Activists National Assembly' office in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, evaluating their activities during the election period and sharing future tasks. The special headquarters was launched on April 22 with the goal of supporting LGBTQ candidates and promoting public discourse on related issues.
In this local election, So Gyeong-jun ran as a candidate for Paju City Council, and Choi Hyo ran as a proportional representative candidate for Incheon City Council on behalf of the Labor Party's LGBTQ candidates. Both candidates attended the closing ceremony and shared their reflections on the election process.
Candidate So Gyeong-jun expressed, "There was a lot of interest and support from LGBTQ voters," and mentioned, "After the election, I want to resume my music activities and meet new colleagues in the queer music industry."
Candidate Choi Hyo stated, "As a Coupang logistics center worker and an LGBTQ individual, I ran to bring about changes on the ground," and added, "The labor union and colleagues naturally accepted my coming out." He further emphasized, "The election may be over, but this is just the beginning," and declared, "I will expand solidarity for gender equality in the workplace and marginalized workers."
The Labor Party's LGBTQ Committee evaluated that through this election, they confirmed the presence of LGBTQ political forces but stressed the need for continuous action and organizational expansion beyond the election period.
For future activities, they plan to pursue policies such as 'Anti-Discrimination Ordinance in the Workplace,' 'Domestic Partnership Ordinance,' and 'Complete Randomization of Resident Registration Numbers,' as well as activate local LGBTQ community gatherings and organize events highlighting the lives of socially marginalized individuals.
노동당 성소수자선대본 해단…“선거 넘어 일상적 정치로 확장”
노동당이 제9회 전국동시지방선거를 계기로 운영한 성소수자선거대책특별본부가 공식 활동을 마무리했다.
노동당 성소수자위원회는 지난 20일 서울 용산구 ‘좌파활동가전국결집’ 사무실에서 해단식을 열고, 선거 기간 동안의 활동을 평가하며 향후 과제를 공유했다. 이번 특별본부는 지난 4월 22일 출범해 성소수자 후보 지원과 관련 의제의 공론화를 목표로 운영됐다.
이번 지방선거에서는 소경준 파주시의원 후보와 최효 인천시의원 비례대표 후보가 노동당 성소수자 후보로 출마했다. 두 후보는 해단식에 참석해 선거 과정에 대한 소회를 밝혔다.
소경준 후보는 “성소수자 유권자들의 많은 관심과 지원이 있었다”고 밝히며, “선거 이후 음악 활동을 재개해 퀴어 음악계에서 새로운 동료를 만나고 싶다”고 말했다.
최효 후보는 “쿠팡 물류센터 노동자이자 성소수자로서 현장의 변화를 만들기 위해 출마했다”며 “노동조합과 동료들이 커밍아웃을 자연스럽게 받아들여줬다”고 전했다. 이어 “선거는 끝났지만 이제부터가 시작”이라며 “성평등한 일터와 주변화된 노동자들의 연대를 확대해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
노동당 성소수자위원회는 이번 선거를 통해 성소수자 정치세력으로서의 존재감을 확인했다고 평가하면서도, 선거 시기를 넘어선 지속적인 실천과 조직 확대의 필요성을 강조했다.
향후 활동으로는 ‘일터 내 차별금지 조례’, ‘생활동반자 조례’, ‘주민등록번호 완전난수화’ 등 정책 추진과 함께 지역 기반 성소수자 모임 활성화, 그리고 사회적 소수자의 삶을 조명하는 행사 등을 계획하고 있다.
