"Malawi's Madalitso Band"
The Jeonju World Sound Festival offers a special time where music from around the world and our own sounds come together on one stage. The diverse music connecting Malawi, India, Canada, Poland, and Egypt transcends borders and languages to become one resonance, transforming Jeonju into a stage where the sounds of the world meet this summer.
Music is the oldest language. Despite different languages, cultures, and ways of life, they naturally connect in front of a common rhythm. This year's sound festival presents a special moment where tradition and modernity, East and West, and different cultures meet to create new emotions through the World Music program.
First, Malawi's Madalitso Band, representing Malawi, is one of the most prominent artists on the European world music stage. Captivating global music fans with intense African rhythms and vibrant performances, they are set to elevate the heat of the sound festival with beats resembling the breath of the earth and explosive energy.
India's Yotam Silberstein's stage is not just a performance but a journey. His music, a blend of deep-rooted Indian traditional music and contemporary sensibilities, conveys surprisingly warm empathy even within exotic melodies. Closing one's eyes, the vast landscapes of India unfold, and each note is expected to deeply resonate in the hearts of the audience beyond borders and languages.
Collaborative stages crossing borders also gather expectations. The collaboration of Korean and Polish artists in "Chopin & Arirang" encapsulates the lyricism of Chopin and the emotions of our folk song "Arirang" on one stage, offering a unique experience where different cultures unite through music. Similarly, "string&wind" on the same stage conveys through delicate ensemble created by Korean and Polish musicians that music does not need borders or languages.
The collaboration of Korea and Canada in "Janis Joplin & The Cuties with Song Bong-geum" freely navigates through jazz, folk, and Korean traditional music sensibilities, painting a new musical landscape. The stage where different musical languages seamlessly blend is expected to showcase the true charm of world music that breaks down genre and cultural boundaries.
The meeting of Korea and Egypt in "Majika Band" guides the audience into a new world of music with the unique sound created by the mysterious Arab melodies meeting Korean music. The fusion of unfamiliar rhythms and familiar emotions is anticipated to provide a unique resonance never experienced before.
This year's World Music program goes beyond introducing global music. It unfolds on stage the process where different cultures meet, understand each other's traditions, and lead to new art.
Kim Jung-soo, the executive director of the sound festival, said, "World Music is not just a performance introducing different cultures, but a process of understanding and empathizing with each other through music," adding, "I hope you can feel the new resonance created by the diverse sounds of the world and our music at this year's sound festival."

전주세계소리축제가 세계 각국의 음악과 우리 소리가 한 무대에서 어우러지는 특별한 시간을 선사한다. 말라위와 인도, 캐나다, 폴란드, 이집트를 잇는 다채로운 음악은 국경과 언어를 넘어 하나의 울림이 되고, 전주는 올여름 세계의 소리가 만나는 무대로 변신한다.
음악은 가장 오래된 언어다. 서로 다른 말과 문화, 삶의 방식은 달라도 하나의 리듬 앞에서는 자연스럽게 연결된다. 올해 소리축제는 월드뮤직 프로그램을 통해 전통과 현대, 동양과 서양, 그리고 서로 다른 문화가 만나 새로운 감동을 만들어내는 특별한 순간을 선보인다.
먼저 말라위를 대표하는 <마달리초 밴드>는 최근 유럽 월드뮤직 무대에서 가장 주목받는 아티스트 중 하나로 손꼽힌다. 아프리카의 강렬한 리듬과 생동감 넘치는 퍼포먼스로 세계 음악 팬들을 사로잡고 있는 이들은 대지의 숨결을 닮은 비트와 폭발적인 에너지로 소리축제의 열기를 한층 끌어올릴 예정이다.
