"Artist with a Camera, Mistaken for a Criminal"... Director Jung Yoon-suk Petitions for Acquittal, 2,832 Members of the Film Industry Sign Petition

Documentary director Jung Yoon-seok was arrested on the scene and charged while covering the so-called 'court occupation incident' that took place at the Seoul Western District Court on January 19. In response, the film industry has launched a large-scale petition movement.

A total of 2,781 filmmakers, citizens, and 51 film organizations signed a petition urging for his innocence, and submitted it officially to the trial panel ahead of the second hearing scheduled for the 16th.

Director Jung is known for shedding light on social issues through documentaries such as , , , and , consistently engaging in activities by recording tragic scenes in our society like the Yongsan Tragedy, Sewol Ferry Disaster, and Itaewon Murder Case. This time, he was charged by the prosecution as an 'instigator of riots' while documenting the moment when the crisis of democracy becomes a reality.

In response, the film industry strongly criticized the charges, stating that "Director Jung Yoon-seok simply recorded the scene out of ethical commitment as an artist," and that this indictment is a "clear violation of freedom of expression."

The petition was also signed by renowned domestic directors such as Park Chan-wook (), Kim Sung-soo (), Lee Myung-se (), Jang Hang-jun (), Byun Young-joo (), Boo Ji-young (), Lim Dae-hyung and Jeon Go-un (), and Jin Mo-young ().

Furthermore, the 'Freedom of Expression Network Against Hate and Censorship (21Jonet)' also submitted a separate petition to the trial panel, with 169 organizations and 11,831 citizens participating in the signatures. The Busan International Film Festival also submitted a separate petition, stating that "Director Jung Yoon-seok is a creator who records national crises, distinct from extreme right-wing forces."

Filmmakers and citizens collectively pointed out, "This indictment could undermine the freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution and set a dangerous precedent by stigmatizing artists as criminals," urging for Jung's innocence so that the actions of artists recording the truth are not punished.

다큐멘터리 감독 정윤석이 지난 1월 19일 서울서부지법에서 벌어진 이른바 '법원 점거 사태'를 취재하던 중 현장에서 체포돼 기소된 가운데, 영화계가 대규모 탄원운동에 나섰다.

총 2,781명의 영화인과 시민, 51개 영화단체가 그의 무죄를 촉구하는 탄원서에 서명했고, 16일 열리는 2차 공판을 앞두고 재판부에 이를 공식 제출했다.

정 감독은 , <논픽션 다이어리>, <밤섬해적단 서울불바다>, <진리에게> 등 사회적 이슈를 조명해온 다큐멘터리 감독으로, 용산 참사, 세월호 참사, 이태원 참사 등 우리 사회의 비극적 현장을 기록하며 꾸준한 활동을 이어왔다. 이번에도 “민주주의의 위기가 현실이 되는 순간”을 목격하고자 현장을 기록하던 중 검찰로부터 ‘폭동 가담자’로 기소된 상태다.

이에 대해 영화계는 “정윤석 감독은 예술가로서의 윤리적 의지에 따라 현장을 기록했을 뿐”이라며, 이번 기소는 “명백한 표현의 자유 침해”라고 강하게 비판했다.

탄원서에는 박찬욱(<헤어질 결심>), 김성수(<서울의 봄>), 이명세(<더 킬러스>), 장항준(<리바운드>), 변영주(<화차>), 부지영(<카트>), 임대형·전고운(), 진모영(<님아, 그 강을 건너지 마오>) 감독 등 국내 대표 감독들이 이름을 올렸다.

또한 ‘혐오와 검열에 맞서는 표현의 자유 네트워크(21조넷)’도 별도 탄원서를 재판부에 제출, 169개 단체와 11,831명의 시민이 서명에 참여했다. 부산국제영화제 또한 “정윤석 감독은 극우세력과는 결이 다른, 국가적 위기를 기록하는 창작자”라며 별도 탄원서를 제출했다.

영화인들과 시민들은 한목소리로 “이번 기소가 헌법이 보장한 표현의 자유를 훼손하고, 예술가를 범죄자로 낙인찍는 위험한 선례가 될 수 있다”고 지적하며, “진실을 기록하는 예술가의 행위가 처벌받지 않도록 정 감독에게 무죄를 선고해달라”고 촉구했다.
