Photographer Hwang Myeong-ja presents a solo exhibition titled 'Breath Flowing Again,' capturing the meaning of life, time, loss, and recovery through black and white photographs.
The exhibition will be held at Jeonju Seohakdong Photo Art Museum from the 11th to the 16th. In this exhibition, viewers can encounter works that metaphorically express human life embedded in the cycle of nature, observing the life of lotus flowers through black and white photographs that tone down vibrant colors.
The exhibition title, 'Breath Flowing Again,' encapsulates the idea that the end and beginning of life are connected within a single cycle. Contrasting the joy and sorrow, growth and demise through the blooming lotus flowers and withered lotus, the artworks depict human life that goes through joy and sorrow, growth and extinction, showing that even in moments of extinction, there is a continuation into new life.
In her artist's note, Hwang Myeong-ja stated, "I deliberately erased the colors of the camera in the splendid lotus field" and "I chose the black and white frame to capture the essence of life by removing the temptation of the surface."
For the artist, lotus flowers are not just simple natural subjects. From the blooming flowers imbued with light, she reads the joy and love of life, while from the bowed stems, she discerns the sorrows and pains endured. The rough particles filling the screen symbolize traces of sweat and tears engraved at every moment of life, and the interpretation of the flower's faded spot as a space where the breath toward another life continues, not the end.
The works presented in this exhibition convey emotions through light and shadow, texture, and space, rather than vibrant colors. The restrained black and white screens lead the viewers not to linger on the external beauty of the flowers but to a contemplative time to reflect on their own lives and memories.
Building upon a delicate gaze towards nature and restrained photographic language, Hwang has continued her work of elevating the essence and emotions of life from everyday landscapes. By focusing on the traces of time and life seeping within the subjects rather than their outward appearance, she has constructed a world of art reflecting on human existence and the meaning of life through nature.
The Seohakdong Photo Art Museum, where the exhibition is taking place, is a specialized photo exhibition space located in Jeonju Seohakdong Art Village. It has consistently hosted solo and curated exhibitions of domestic and international photographers, broadening the scope of regional photographic culture. Operating various exhibitions and cultural programs connecting photography art and the region in a renovated hanok space.
Through this exhibition, Hwang Myeong-ja expressed, "Even in moments of extinction, the gentle breath towards the next life does not stop" and "I hope that the solid remnants left in the place where the splendor has disappeared will linger as a warm comfort over someone's life."

황명자 사진작가가 흑백사진을 통해 삶과 시간, 상실과 회복의 의미를 담아낸 개인전 ‘다시 흐르는 숨’을 선보인다.
전시는 오는 11일부터 16일까지 전주 서학동사진미술관에서 열린다. 이번 전시에서는 화려한 색채를 덜어낸 흑백사진을 통해 연꽃의 생애를 바라보며, 피고 지는 자연의 순환 속에 담긴 인간의 삶을 은유적으로 표현한 작품들을 만날 수 있다.
전시 제목인 ‘다시 흐르는 숨’은 삶의 끝과 시작이 하나의 순환 안에서 이어진다는 의미를 담고 있다. 활짝 피어난 연꽃과 시들어 고개를 숙인 연의 모습을 대비해 기쁨과 슬픔, 성장과 소멸을 거치는 인간의 삶을 표현하고, 소멸의 순간 또한 새로운 생명으로 이어지는 과정임을 보여준다.
황명자 작가는 작가노트에서 “화려한 연밭에서 나는 기어이 카메라의 색을 지워버렸다”며 “표면의 유혹을 걷어내고 생의 본질을 담기 위해 흑백의 프레임을 선택했다”고 밝혔다.
작가에게 연꽃은 단순한 자연의 피사체가 아니다. 빛을 머금고 피어난 꽃에서는 삶의 환희와 사랑을, 고개를 숙인 줄기에서는 견뎌야 했던 슬픔과 고통을 읽어낸다. 화면을 채우는 거친 이미지의 입자는 삶의 마디마다 새겨진 땀과 눈물의 흔적을 상징하며, 꽃이 진 자리 역시 끝이 아닌 또 다른 생명을 향한 호흡이 이어지는 공간으로 해석된다.
이번 전시에서 선보이는 작품들은 화려한 색채 대신 빛과 그림자, 질감과 여백을 통해 감정을 전달한다. 절제된 흑백 화면은 관람객의 시선을 꽃의 외형적 아름다움에 머물게 하지 않고, 각자의 삶과 기억을 되돌아보는 사유의 시간으로 이끈다.
황 작가는 자연을 바라보는 섬세한 시선과 절제된 사진 언어를 바탕으로 일상의 풍경에서 삶의 본질과 감정을 길어 올리는 작업을 이어왔다. 대상의 외형보다 그 안에 스며든 시간과 생명의 흔적에 주목하며, 자연을 매개로 인간 존재와 삶의 의미를 성찰하는 작품세계를 구축해 왔다.
전시가 열리는 서학동사진미술관은 전주 서학동예술마을에 자리한 사진 전문 전시공간이다. 국내외 사진가들의 개인전과 기획전을 꾸준히 개최하며 지역 사진문화의 저변을 넓혀왔으며, 한옥을 개조한 공간에서 사진예술과 지역을 연결하는 다양한 전시와 문화 프로그램을 운영하고 있다.
황명자 작가는 이번 전시를 통해 “소멸의 순간에도 다음 생을 향한 잔잔한 호흡은 멈추지 않는다”며 “화려함이 사라진 자리에 남은 묵직한 잔상이 누군가의 삶 위에 따뜻한 위로로 머물기를 바란다”고 전했다.
