Renowned picture book authors from Korea and Taiwan gather in Jeonju, known as the 'City of Books'.
Jeonju City announced on the 13th that it will host the 5th Jeonju International Picture Book Fair at the Hanok Village Cultural Center from October 2nd to the 25th, spanning 24 days.
The theme of this year's book fair is 'Picturing the Memories'. It aims to create a festival where people can share and empathize precious memories through picture books, which are a form of visual art that everyone holds dear.
This year, efforts have been made to enhance the substance of the event by securing national and provincial support for the first time. Jeonju City plans to leap as a 'picture book business platform' representing South Korea by raising the professionalism of the picture book publishing industry beyond simple exhibitions and viewings. Accordingly, the main stage has been moved to the Hanok Village Cultural Center, expanding the scale of the event.
The lineup of main invited authors is also noteworthy. This year, the spotlight is on Taiwanese authors, who are recognized as a powerhouse in East Asian picture book and publishing.
Notably, Jimmy Liao, a world-renowned figure in Taiwanese illustration, will visit Korea after 30 years to meet domestic readers. Jimmy Liao is well-known as the original creator of works such as 'Starry Starry Night' and 'The Left-Handed Woman, the Right-Handed Man,' produced into movies and musicals, as well as the animation 'Smiling Fish.' He also won the Special Prize at the 2020 Bologna Ragazzi Award for 'A Cinema Named Life.'
Additionally, prominent Taiwanese authors such as Liu Shigong, Lin Xiaobei, Wuluzhe, and Zhandieer will showcase picture book works that blend Eastern emotions with modern sensibilities.
From Korea, Kim Dong-sung, who has been expressing Korean emotions and memories with delicate and lyrical styles, will participate. Kim Dong-sung won the Baeksang Publishing Culture Award in 2004 for 'Meeting Mom,' and later received awards such as the 'Most Enjoyable Book in Korea' at the 2025 Seoul International Book Fair for 'Kim Gun Crazy About Flowers,' the Special Prize at the 2025 Korea Picture Book Awards, and the Bologna Ragazzi Award in 2026.
The exhibition will run for 24 days, with major programs concentrated from October 2nd to the 4th over three days.
Key programs include the 'Picture Book Conference,' which sheds light on the world of picture book authors from Korea and abroad, the 'Book Market' with the participation of 36 domestic and international publishers, 'Lectures and Workshops' where attendees can meet authors directly, and a 'Publishing Exchange Seminar' where domestic and international publishers exchange information.
Kim In-taek, Director of the Jeonju City Library and Lifelong Learning Division, expressed, "Picture books have the power to connect our lives and memories beyond generations and languages," adding, "Through this book fair where global picture book masters such as Jimmy Liao from Taiwan and Kim Dong-sung from Korea gather, I hope visitors can experience the deep resonance and infinite possibilities conveyed by picture books."
전주국제그림책도서전, 한국·대만 대표 작가 한자리에
‘책의 도시’ 전주에서 한국과 대만을 대표하는 그림책 작가들이 한자리에 모인다.
전주시는 오는 10월 2일부터 25일까지 24일간 한국소리문화의전당 일원에서 ‘제5회 전주국제그림책도서전’을 개최한다고 13일 밝혔다.
올해 도서전의 주제는 ‘Picturing the Memories(기억을 그리다)’다. 누구나 간직하고 있는 소중한 추억과 기억을 그림책이라는 시각예술을 통해 나누고 공감하는 축제로 꾸민다는 의미를 담았다.
특히 올해는 처음으로 국·도비를 확보해 행사의 내실을 강화했다. 전주시는 단순한 전시·관람을 넘어 그림책 출판산업의 전문성을 높이고, 대한민국을 대표하는 ‘그림책 비즈니스 플랫폼’으로 도약한다는 구상이다. 이에 따라 주무대를 한국소리문화의전당으로 옮겨 행사 규모도 한층 확대한다.
메인 초청 작가 라인업도 눈길을 끈다. 올해는 동아시아 그림책·출판 강국으로 꼽히는 대만 작가들을 집중 조명한다.
대표적으로 대만 일러스트레이션의 세계적인 거장 지미 리아오 작가가 30년 만에 한국을 찾아 국내 독자들과 만난다. 지미 리아오는 영화와 뮤지컬로 제작된 ‘별이 빛나는 밤’과 ‘왼쪽으로 가는 여자, 오른쪽으로 가는 남자’, 애니메이션 ‘미소 짓는 물고기’ 등의 원작자로 잘 알려져 있다. ‘인생이라는 이름의 영화관’으로 2020년 볼로냐 라가치상 시네마 특별상을 수상하기도 했다.
이와 함께 대만의 대표 작가인 리우쉬공, 린샤오베이, 우루이저, 잔디어 등도 참여해 동양적인 정서와 현대적인 감각이 어우러진 그림책 작품을 선보인다.
한국에서는 섬세하고 서정적인 화풍으로 한국적 정서와 기억을 표현해 온 김동성 작가가 참여한다. 김동성 작가는 ‘엄마 마중’으로 2004년 백상출판문화상을 수상했으며, ‘꽃에 미친 김 군’으로 2025 서울국제도서전 ‘한국에서 가장 즐거운 책’ 대상과 ‘2025 대한민국 그림책상’ 특별상, 2026년 볼로냐 라가치상 등을 수상했다.
전시는 24일간 상설로 운영되며, 10월 2일부터 4일까지 3일간은 주요 프로그램이 집중적으로 펼쳐진다.
주요 프로그램으로는 국내외 그림책 작가들의 작품 세계를 조명하는 ‘그림책 콘퍼런스’, 국내외 36개 출판사가 참여하는 ‘북마켓’, 작가와 직접 만나는 ‘강연 및 워크숍’, 국내외 출판인들이 정보를 교류하는 ‘출판 교류 세미나’ 등이 마련된다.
김인택 전주시 도서관평생학습본부장은 “그림책은 세대와 언어를 넘어 우리의 삶과 기억을 이어주는 힘이 있다”며 “대만의 지미 리아오, 한국의 김동성 작가를 비롯해 세계적인 그림책 거장들이 한자리에 모이는 이번 도서전을 통해 그림책이 전하는 깊은 울림과 무한한 가능성을 경험하시길 바란다”고 말했다.
