Lee Seok-gyu, the only surviving independence fighter in the Honam region, passed away at the age of 100 on the morning of the 13th. Lee Won-taek, the governor of North Jeolla Province, visited the deceased's funeral altar on that day to pay his respects and offer condolences to the bereaved family.
Governor Lee expressed deep sorrow, saying, "I cannot help but feel profound sadness upon hearing the news of the passing of Lee Seok-gyu, a patriot who dedicated his youth for the independence of our country and devoted his entire life to serving the nation." He continued, "I offer my deepest condolences to the deceased and words of comfort to the bereaved family, praying for the deceased's eternal peace."
He further remarked, "Today's Republic of Korea and North Jeolla Province exist thanks to the noble sacrifices and dedication of Patriot Lee. His life is a precious history that we all must remember and pass down to future generations."
Lee Seok-gyu was born in 1926 and, while studying at Gwangju Normal School in 1943, organized reading sessions with classmates to raise national consciousness. He transcribed the Declaration of Independence, made the Taegukgi (Korean flag), and planned an uprising in response to the landing of the Allied Forces, but was arrested by the Japanese and imprisoned. In recognition of his achievements, the government awarded him the Presidential Commendation on March 1, 2010. Every March 1st and August 15th, North Jeolla Province has paid tribute to him with gratitude and respect.
Governor Lee Won-taek stated, "It is our duty to ensure that the love for the country and spirit of independence that Patriot Lee cherished throughout his life are properly passed on to the future generations of North Jeolla." He added, "I will do my best to ensure that his noble intentions are properly remembered."
The funeral of the deceased will be organized by the Gwangbokhoe (Independence Movement Day) under the funeral committee. The funeral altar is set up at the funeral hall of Jeonbuk University Hospital, and the funeral will be held at the North Jeolla Provincial Office on the 15th. After the funeral, the remains of the deceased will be moved to the National Daejeon Cemetery for burial.
조국 독립에 바친 한평생, 호남 유일 생존 이석규 애국지사 별세
호남 지역 유일 생존 독립 유공자였던 이석규 애국지사가 13일 새벽 100세를 일기로 별세했다. 이원택 전북특별자치도지사는 이날 고인의 빈소를 찾아 영면을 기원하고 유가족을 위로했다.
이 지사는 조문 자리에서 “조국의 독립을 위해 젊음을 바치고 평생 나라를 위해 헌신하신 이석규 애국지사께서 우리 곁을 떠나셨다는 소식에 깊은 슬픔을 금할 수 없다”며 “삼가 고인의 명복을 빌며 유가족께도 깊은 위로의 말씀을 드린다”고 말했다.
이어 “애국지사님의 숭고한 희생과 헌신이 있었기에 오늘의 대한민국과 전북이 있을 수 있었다”면서 “그 삶은 우리 모두가 반드시 기억하고 후대에 전해야 할 소중한 역사”라고 애도했다.
이석규 애국지사는 1926년 태어나 1943년 광주사범학교 재학 당시 학우들과 독서회를 조직해 민족의식을 키웠다. 이후 독립선언문을 필사하고 태극기를 제작하는 한편, 연합군 상륙에 맞춰 봉기를 계획하다 일제에 체포돼 옥고를 치렀다. 정부는 이러한 공훈을 기려 2010년 3월 1일 대통령표창을 수여했으며, 전북특별자치도 역시 해마다 3·1절과 광복절에 고인을 찾아 감사와 존경의 뜻을 전하며 예우해 왔다.
이원택 전북자치도지사는 “애국지사님께서 평생 지켜오신 나라 사랑과 독립 정신을 전북의 미래세대가 올바르게 이어갈 수 있도록 하는 것이 우리의 책무”라며 “그 숭고한 뜻이 제대로 기억될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편 고인의 장례는 광복회가 주관하는 장례위원회 구성 아래 사회장으로 치러진다. 빈소는 전북대학교병원 장례식장에 마련됐으며, 영결식은 오는 15일 전북특별자치도청에서 거행된다. 영결식을 마친 뒤 고인의 유해는 국립대전현충원으로 옮겨 안장식을 진행할 예정이다.
