The Jeonju World Sound Festival (organized by Chairman Choi Cheol, hereinafter referred to as the Sound Festival) concluded its five-day journey on the 16th with a grand finale.
Celebrating its 25th edition this year, the Sound Festival focused on the value of traditional music with the keyword 'The Breath of Sound, Gathered on a Stage,' expanding its stages to various locations in Jeonju such as performance venues, streets, and traditional markets. It was praised for engaging the audience not just as passive spectators but as active participants in creating the festival, embodying the communal meaning of 'stage' in today's festival scene.
This year's festival brought together a variety of sounds ranging from traditional pansori performances by master singers to new interpretations by young vocalists, traditional plays, world music, popular music, and even AI-generated music.
In the main program 'Five Elements of Pansori,' master singers presented 'Playful Pansori,' incorporating traditional plays like tightrope walking and pangut to breathe together with the audience. 'Sound Fringe' expanded its stages to locations such as Jeonbuk University's Gucheongmun, Jeonju Daesasupcheong, Yeonhwajung Library, and Palbok Art Factory, providing opportunities for people to naturally encounter sounds in their daily lives.
'World Music' and 'Sound NEXT' explored new possibilities of traditional music by bringing together Korean and global music. Particularly, 'Sound NEXT' focused on expanding the festival beyond a mere performance stage to a platform for domestic and international distribution, collaboration, and exchange among traditional music-based artists.
Audience participation programs were also enhanced. In the 'AI Pansori Creation Project,' audiences could enjoy and vote on works directly. Programs like 'Children's Sound Festival' and 'Sound Cinema' allowed people to experience sound in various ways through a combination of performances, experiences, movies, and stories.
The stages of Shim Su-bong and Urban Zakapa showcased the expansiveness of traditional and popular music, bridging generations with the 'sound,' eliciting responses from the audience.
The 25th Sound Festival came to a close as a festival where master singers and young vocalists, tradition and modernity, local and global, artists and audiences converged on one 'stage.' The festival gained significance as the sounds that resided within the performance venues spread to the streets, markets, and daily life of the city, completing the festival's 'stage' together with the applause, cheers, and active participation of the audience.
Chairman Choi Cheol, the organizer of the Sound Festival, stated, "In this meaningful 25th year, we confirmed the potential of the Sound Festival where traditional music values are upheld while audiences and artists breathe together," adding, "Based on the various possibilities confirmed through this festival, we will continue to make the unique colors of the Sound Festival even more vivid in the future."
제25회 전주세계소리축제, 닷새간 여정 마무리…‘소리의 판’으로 전주 물들여
전주세계소리축제(조직위원장 최철, 이하 소리축제)가 닷새간의 여정을 마치고 16일 대단원의 막을 내렸다.
올해로 25회째를 맞은 소리축제는 ‘소리의 숨결, 모아 판으로’를 키워드로 전통음악의 가치를 중심에 두면서도 공연장과 거리, 전통시장 등 전주 곳곳으로 무대를 확장했다. 관객을 단순한 공연 관람객이 아닌 축제를 함께 만들어가는 주체로 끌어들이며, ‘판’이 지닌 공동체적 의미를 오늘날의 축제 현장에 새롭게 구현했다는 평가다.
올해 축제에서는 명창의 판소리부터 젊은 소리꾼들의 새로운 해석, 전통 연희와 월드뮤직, 대중음악, AI에 이르기까지 다채로운 소리가 한자리에 모였다.
대표 프로그램인 ‘판소리 다섯바탕’에서는 명창들의 깊이 있는 소리에 줄타기와 판굿 등 전통 연희를 더해 관객과 함께 호흡하는 ‘노는 판’을 선보였다. ‘소리 프린지’는 전북대 구정문, 전주대사습청, 연화정도서관, 팔복예술공장 등으로 무대를 넓혀 일상 속에서 자연스럽게 소리를 만나는 기회를 제공했다.
‘월드뮤직’과 ‘소리 NEXT’에서는 한국과 세계의 음악이 만나 전통음악의 새로운 가능성을 모색했다. 특히 ‘소리 NEXT’는 소리축제를 단순한 공연의 장을 넘어 전통음악 기반 예술가들의 국내외 유통과 협업, 교류를 만들어가는 플랫폼으로 확장하는 데 초점을 맞췄다.
관객 참여형 프로그램도 한층 강화됐다. ‘AI 판소리 창작 프로젝트’에서는 관객이 직접 작품을 감상하고 투표에 참여했으며, ‘어린이 소리축제’와 ‘소리 시네마’ 등을 통해 공연과 체험, 영화와 이야기가 결합된 다양한 방식으로 소리를 접할 수 있도록 했다.
심수봉과 어반자카파의 무대 역시 전통음악과 대중음악, 세대를 잇는 ‘소리’의 확장성을 보여주며 관객들의 호응을 이끌어냈다.
제25회 소리축제는 명창과 젊은 소리꾼, 전통과 현재, 지역과 세계, 예술가와 관객이 하나의 ‘판’에서 만나는 축제로 막을 내렸다. 특히 공연장 안에 머물던 소리가 거리와 시장, 도시의 일상으로 퍼져나가고, 관객의 박수와 추임새, 적극적인 참여가 더해지면서 축제의 ‘판’을 함께 완성했다는 점에서 의미를 더했다.
최철 소리축제 조직위원장은 “25회라는 뜻깊은 해에 전통음악의 가치를 지키면서도 관객과 예술가가 함께 호흡하는 소리축제의 가능성을 확인했다”며 “이번 축제를 통해 확인한 다양한 가능성을 바탕으로 앞으로도 소리축제만의 색깔을 더욱 선명하게 만들어가겠다”고 말했다.
