Jeonju Hanbok Cultural Creation Center, operated by Jeonju Cultural Foundation, is opening applications for '2026 Hanbok Embroidery Education,' where Jeonju citizens can learn traditional embroidery techniques and experience making Hanbok garments firsthand.
This education program, led by the intangible cultural asset, Master Shin Ae-ja of Jeonju, will take place every Wednesday from September 9 to November 11 at the Korean Traditional Culture Center for a total of 10 sessions.
The theme of the education is making 'Baeja (배자),' a traditional upper garment worn over the jeogori. Participants will learn step-by-step processes necessary for Hanbok production, such as handling needles, taking measurements, cutting fabric, making collars and sleeves, under the guidance of Master Shin.
This education program holds significance as it goes beyond the previous 'Hanbok Accessories Education' offered by Jeonju Hanbok Cultural Creation Center, allowing participants to directly experience traditional garment production. The center has been providing opportunities for citizens to easily access Hanbok culture by offering various accessory-making classes using traditional knots, such as necklaces, mobiles, and embroidered fish.
Through this embroidery education, it is expected that citizens will broaden their understanding of Hanbok culture by not only making accessories but also learning the production process of traditional Hanbok garments.
An official from the foundation stated, "While the previous accessory-making classes helped citizens become familiar with Hanbok culture, this embroidery education will allow participants to experience the elegant beauty of Hanbok firsthand with Master Shin Ae-ja. We hope for the interest and participation of Jeonju citizens who love Hanbok."
Any adult citizen of Jeonju with an interest in traditional Hanbok and hand embroidery can apply for this education program, and the tuition fee is free. The program will accept the first 10 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis, and applications can be submitted through the Jeonju Cultural Foundation's online portal from the 24th to the 30th of this month.
전주문화재단, ‘2026 한복 침선교육’ 수강생 모집
전주문화재단이 운영하는 전주한복문화창작소가 전주 시민을 대상으로 전통 바느질을 배우고 한복 제작을 직접 경험할 수 있는 ‘2026년 한복 침선교육’을 개설하고 수강생을 모집한다.
이번 교육은 전북특별자치도 무형유산 신애자 침선장의 지도 아래 9월 9일부터 11월 11일까지 매주 수요일 한국전통문화전당에서 총 10회에 걸쳐 진행된다.
교육 주제는 저고리 위에 덧입는 전통 상의인 ‘배자(背子) 만들기’로, 수강생들은 침선장에게 직접 바늘 다루기부터 치수 재기, 원단 재단(마름질), 깃과 동정 만들기 등 한복 제작에 필요한 과정을 단계별로 배운다.
특히 이번 교육은 그동안 전주한복문화창작소가 운영해온 ‘한복 소품 교육’에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 전통 의복 제작까지 직접 경험할 수 있다는 점에서 의미가 깊다. 창작소는 그동안 전통매듭을 활용한 목걸이, 모시 모빌, 액막이 명태 만들기 등 다양한 소품 교육을 운영하며 시민들이 한복 문화를 쉽게 접할 수 있는 기회를 제공해왔다.
이번 침선교육을 통해 시민들은 소품 제작을 넘어 전통 한복의 제작 과정을 직접 익히며 한복 문화에 대한 이해를 넓힐 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
재단 관계자는 “그동안 한복 소품 만들기를 통해 시민들이 한복 문화에 친숙해지는 계기를 마련했다면, 이번 침선교육에서는 무형유산 침선장과 함께 한복의 정갈한 아름다움을 손끝으로 직접 경험할 수 있을 것”이라며 “한복을 사랑하는 전주 시민들의 많은 관심과 참여를 바란다”고 말했다.
이번 교육은 전통 한복과 손바느질에 관심 있는 전주 시민 성인이라면 누구나 신청할 수 있으며, 수강료는 무료다. 모집 인원은 선착순 10명으로, 오는 24일부터 30일까지 전주문화재단 누리집을 통해 신청할 수 있다.
