The Jeonju Zoo, which has evolved into an ecological animal park and a breeding hub for endangered species in South Korea, has welcomed a new nest for the internationally endangered species (CITES) Red-tailed Guenon and the designated wild animal, the Meerkat.
The Jeonju Zoo (Director Park Hyeon-young) announced that they received four Red-tailed Guenons and five Meerkats from Daegu Nature Park on the 21st.
The newly introduced Red-tailed Guenons, an internationally endangered species (CITES), are expected to play an important role in the conservation and maintenance of the species at the Jeonju Zoo.
While the four Meerkats and two Red-tailed Guenons currently being raised at the Jeonju Zoo are unable to breed, the newly introduced individuals are capable of breeding, which is expected to significantly contribute to the conservation and genetic diversity of the species in the future.
In particular, this free transfer was not achieved in a short period but is receiving attention for being the result of the continuous exchange of breeding techniques and individual management information between zookeepers in South Korea, maintaining a close cooperative relationship.
With 89 species and 401 animals in possession, the Jeonju Zoo has completed improvements to the breeding environment, including upgrading the radiation room and breeding facilities for this introduction. After the introduction, they plan to undergo an adaptation period before being publicly displayed to the citizens.
Director Park Hyeon-young of the Jeonju Zoo said, “This free transfer was not just about securing animals, but was made possible by the long-standing trust and cooperation among domestic zoos, as a result of the continuous exchange of breeding techniques and individual management information by the zookeepers.” He added, “In the future, we will prioritize animal welfare, make every effort in the conservation and breeding of endangered species, and activate ecological education.”
전주동물원, 멸종위기종 보전 기반 강화
<알락꼬리여우원숭이>
생태동물원이자 국내 멸종위기종 보전·번식 거점으로 거듭나고 있는 전주동물원에 국제적 멸종위기종(CITES)인 알락꼬리여우원숭이와 지정관리 야생동물인 미어캣이 새로운 둥지를 틀게 됐다.
전주동물원(원장 박현영)은 21일 대구 네이처파크로부터 알락꼬리여우원숭이 네 마리와 미어캣 다섯 마리를 무상양여 받았다고 밝혔다.
이번에 도입된 개체인 알락꼬리여우원숭이는 국제적 멸종위기종(CITES)으로 전주동물원의 종 보전과 개체군 유지에 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.
이는 현재 전주동물원에서 사육 중인 미어캣 4마리와 알락꼬리여우원숭이 2마리는 번식이 불가능한 개체인 반면, 이번에 도입되는 개체들은 번식이 가능한 개체여서 향후 종 보전과 유전적 다양성 확보에 크게 기여할 수 있기 때문이다.
특히 이번 무상양여는 단기간에 성사된 것이 아니라, 전주동물원 사육사들이 국내 동물원들과 지속적으로 사육 기술과 개체관리 정보를 교류하고 긴밀한 협력 관계를 이어온 결과라는 점에서 주목을 받고 있다.
현재 89종 401마리를 보유하고 있는 전주동물원은 이번 개체 도입을 위해 방사장과 사육 시설을 정비하는 등 사육 환경 개선을 완료했으며, 도입 이후에는 새로운 환경에 안정적으로 적응할 수 있도록 적응 기간을 거친 뒤 시민들에게 공개할 계획이다.
박현영 전주동물원장은 “이번 무상양여는 단순히 동물을 확보한 것이 아니라 국내 동물원 간 오랜 신뢰와 협력의 결과로, 사육사들이 지속적으로 사육 기술과 개체관리 정보를 교류하며 쌓아온 협력 관계가 있었기에 가능한 성과였다”면서 “앞으로도 동물 복지를 최우선으로 하며, 멸종위기종 보전과 번식 기반 조성, 생태교육 활성화에 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
