Jeonju Cultural Foundation's Palbok Art Factory will host the 2026 Contemporary Painting Exhibition 'Hanji; Rebirth of Aesthetics' from the 21st to the 27th of next month, shedding light on the artistic value and modern potential of hanji.
This exhibition is prepared to showcase the process of hanji, a traditional material, expanding into a new aesthetics by meeting various sculptural languages of contemporary art. Particularly, it presents the artistic potential of hanji connecting tradition and modernity, encapsulating the local community's interest and longing for hanji's UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listing.
The exhibition will feature over 20 artists active in various fields such as calligraphy, intangible heritage, folk painting, contemporary painting, residency, and international artists, showcasing diverse works.
In the Korean calligraphy field, artists Song Hajin and Yeo Taemyeong express the aesthetic beauty and structural elegance of Korean characters in a modern way. Song Hajin attempts fusion with other genres based on the aesthetic beauty of Korean characters, while Yeo Taemyeong reinterprets the structural aesthetics of Korean characters using the separation and disassembly of vowels and consonants, and symbols.
In the intangible heritage field, artists Kim Dongsik, Kim Hyemija, Bang Hwaseon, Park Gyeho, Yeom Jaesu, and Yoon Gyusang showcase the value and beauty of traditional artifacts utilizing traditional hanji and bamboo. Through traditional craft techniques and sculptural beauty of items like Jeonju Jang and Gyohjihap, the depth of traditional culture inherent in hanji will be conveyed.
In the folk painting, contemporary painting, and residency fields, artists Yang Hye-ran, Yoo An-sun, Jo Juyeon, Kim Wansun, Song Sumi, Yeo Eunhee, Yoo Bonghee, Lee Yura, Cha Jongsun, Kim Young-ran, and Jang Young-ae reinterpret hanji in their respective sculptural languages. Through various expression methods utilizing traditional colors and motifs of folk painting, as well as hemp fiber, hanji thread, joomchi hanji, and objects, they further broaden the physical and sculptural potential of hanji.
The participating artists utilize hanji not merely as a traditional material but as a medium conveying modern themes such as nature and humanity, memory and relationships, time and space. Through this, they demonstrate how hanji's unique characteristics like texture, fibrousness, bleeding, and whitespace are reborn with new meanings in contemporary art.
Furthermore, participating international artist Lisa Chun Rodondi presents the potential expansion of hanji medium through tapa sculpture and large-scale installation works featuring wave forms, shedding light on the artistic value and identity of hanji beyond borders.
The opening ceremony was held at 3 p.m. on the 21st at the Sunny Cafe on the 1st floor of Building A at Palbok Art Factory. Jeonju Mayor Jo Gihun, Kim Dongheon, Vice Chairman of Jeonju City Council, participating artists, and cultural arts industry officials attended to celebrate the exhibition and wished for the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listing of hanji.
Kim Cheolmin, Director of the Foundation's Future Culture Department, stated, "This exhibition is a platform for hanji, a traditional material, to showcase new aesthetic possibilities when meeting contemporary art," and expressed, "I ask for the citizens' interest and attendance to raise awareness of hanji's artistic value and UNESCO listing."
팔복예술공장 현대회화기획전 ‘한지; 미학의 재탄생’ 개최
전주문화재단 팔복예술공장이 21일부터 내달 27일까지 한지의 예술적 가치와 현대적 가능성을 조명하는 2026 현대회화기획전 ‘한지; 미학의 재탄생’을 개최한다.
이번 전시는 전통 재료인 한지가 현대미술의 다양한 조형 언어와 만나 새로운 미학으로 확장되는 과정을 보여주기 위해 마련됐다. 특히 한지의 유네스코 인류무형문화유산 등재를 향한 지역사회의 관심과 염원을 담아, 전통과 현대를 잇는 한지의 예술적 가능성을 선보인다.
이번 전시에는 서예, 무형유산, 민화, 현대회화, 레지던시, 국외작가 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하는 작가 20여 명이 참여해 다채로운 작품을 선보인다.
한글 서예 분야에서는 송하진 작가와 여태명 작가가 한글의 조형미와 구조적 아름다움을 현대적으로 풀어낸다. 송하진 작가는 한글의 조형미를 바탕으로 타 장르와의 융합을 시도하고, 여태명 작가는 자·모음의 분리와 해체, 부호 등을 활용해 한글의 구조적 미학을 재해석한다.
무형유산 분야에서는 김동식, 김혜미자, 방화선, 박계호, 엄재수, 윤규상 작가가 참여해 전통 한지와 대나무를 활용한 전통 기물의 가치와 아름다움을 선보인다. 전주장과 교지함을 비롯해 합죽선, 지우산 등 전통 공예의 제작기법과 조형미를 통해 한지가 지닌 전통문화의 깊이를 전할 예정이다.
민화와 현대회화, 레지던시 분야에서는 양혜란, 유안순, 조주연, 김완순, 송수미, 여은희, 유봉희, 이유라, 차종순, 김영란, 장영애 작가가 각자의 조형 언어로 한지를 재해석한다. 민화의 전통 색채와 도상부터 닥섬유, 한지 실, 줌치한지, 오브제 등을 활용한 다양한 표현 방식을 통해 한지의 물성과 조형적 가능성을 한층 넓힌다.
참여 작가들은 한지를 단순한 전통 재료에 머물게 하지 않고 자연과 인간, 기억과 관계, 시간과 공간 등 현대적 주제를 담아내는 매체로 활용한다. 이를 통해 한지가 지닌 질감과 섬유성, 번짐과 여백 등 고유한 특성이 현대미술 안에서 어떻게 새로운 의미로 재탄생하는지를 보여준다.
또한 국외작가로 참여하는 리사 전 로돈디(Lisa Chun Rodondi)는 타파 조각과 물결 형태의 대형 설치작품을 통해 한지 매체의 확장 가능성을 제시하며, 국경을 넘어 한지의 예술적 가치와 정체성을 조명한다.
개막식은 21일 오후 3시 팔복예술공장 A동 1층 카페 써니에서 열렸다. 조지훈 전주시장과 김동헌 전주시의회 부의장, 참여 작가 및 문화예술계 관계자들이 참석해 전시 개최를 축하하고 한지의 유네스코 인류무형문화유산 등재를 함께 기원했다.
김철민 재단 미래문화실장은 “이번 전시는 전통 재료인 한지가 현대미술과 만나 새로운 미학적 가능성을 보여주는 자리”라며 “한지의 예술적 가치와 유네스코 등재에 대한 관심을 높이는 계기가 될 수 있도록 시민 여러분의 많은 관심과 관람을 부탁드린다”고 전했다.
