The radio special program 'Guso Project, Stories to Leave Behind' by Gugak Broadcasting (CEO Kim Eun-ha) sheds light on the 50-year career of Choi Dong-hyun, an honorary professor at Gunsan University, who has dedicated his life to the study of Pansori, preserving our traditional culture. Born in Suncheon, Jeollabuk-do in 1953, Professor Choi Dong-hyun has elevated the study of Pansori from mere appreciation to the realm of academia, focusing on the theories of Pansori singers and masters. Even after retiring in 2019 from the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Gunsan University, he continues his research and writing on Pansori diligently at his home in Iksan, known as 'Jizokheon.'

His journey as a Pansori researcher began with poetry, as he originally obtained a master's degree in poetry criticism. He received praise for being selected in a university literary contest, with some even saying, "A great poet is born." Professor Choi Dong-hyun, who has devoted his life to Pansori research, started his journey from none other than poetry.

In 1974, the performance of the Pansori singer Park Dong-jin's 'Heungboga' at a university festival marked a turning point in his life. Professors Lee Gi-woo and Chun Yi-du, who were knowledgeable about Pansori, repeatedly urged him to continue his research, emphasizing that understanding Pansori requires intellectual and emotional sensitivity. This, combined with the fervor for researching classical literature that swept through the Korean literature scene in the 1970s, led the literary youth to delve into the world of Pansori.

Believing that understanding the essence of Pansori requires experiencing it firsthand, he plunged into practical experiences. He sought out renowned Pansori singers like Hong Jeong-taek and Lee Seung-geun to learn drumming and vocal techniques directly. In 1987, he systematized the Pansori techniques of the master singer Song Young-joo under the Korean Classical Music Association, establishing the theoretical basis for the traditional singing style in Jeollabuk-do. This effort led to the formalization of field jargon like 'Mokguseong' and 'Eotbupim' as official academic terms, replacing the colloquial language used in the singing circles. Mastering drumming skills through direct experience became his most powerful tool for extracting valuable techniques from the reticent master singers in the field.

Starting with the commentary on Pansori singers on Jeonju Culture Broadcasting in 1987, Professor Choi Dong-hyun traveled across the country, meeting renowned singers and exploring historical sites through radio and TV appearances. Based on thorough empirical research, he cross-verified the testimonies of an elderly person he met in Mangseong-myeon, Iksan in 1991, revealing the real names of the Pansori singers Jung Jeong-ryeol and Jung Kwang-soo. His work also corrected romantic interpretations of the song 'Memories' by the national singer Im Bang-wool, highlighting the rigorous empirical work he undertook.

Moving from subjective criticism of vocalists to academic research, he laid the foundation for extensive writing activities based on Korean traditional music. He has authored a total of 84 volumes of thick publications, meticulously researched and compiled over sleepless nights. Moreover, with only three staff members, he spent five years translating the five basic Pansori melodies and songs, establishing a subtitle system for live performances. Enduring shoulder and elbow surgeries, his passion and dedication to globalizing our traditional music have left a shining legacy in the form of prestigious awards.

Professor Choi Dong-hyun deciphers the contradictions of the class system in Chunhyangga and interprets the contemporary social issues embedded in Heungboga. The reason why Pansori continues to be sung incessantly is that its value remains relevant today. Professor Choi Dong-hyun, who has spent half a century nurturing the roots of our traditional music, will leave behind valuable records showcasing the path taken by Pansori research in South Korea. This special Gugak Broadcasting program can be heard on major radio stations nationwide, including Seoul, Gwangju, Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan, as well as on TV channels such as KT Genie TV (Channel 251), SK Broadband Btv (Channel 268), LG Uplus (Channel 189), and LG Hello Vision (Channel 174).
