The National Gugak Center will present the representative changgeuk (Korean traditional opera) "Dokgap-i Dwae Surenori" at the Sky Theater of the National Theater of Korea in Seoul at 3 p.m. on the 12th and 13th. This work, produced and premiered in Namwon in 2025, has been invited as a featured performance for the "2026 Changgeuk-Centered World Music Drama Festival" and will meet audiences in the capital region beyond Namwon.
"Dokgap-i Dwae Surenori" depicts the journey of Dokgap-i Dwae and his daughter Hwaseon as they search for their scattered family in the midst of war, wandering through Jirisan Mountain, portraying human dignity, motherly love, and the meaning of life. By adding imaginative storytelling to existing place names in Namwon and Jirisan, the production unfolds the region's life and emotions through the language of changgeuk.
The script was written by Bae Samsik, directed by Kim Jungi, and the music composition and direction were handled by Han Seungseok. Based on pansori music, the production combines dramatic narrative and modern stage expressions to reinterpret the stories of Namwon and Jirisan in today's theatrical language.
A total of 43 performers, including members of the National Gugak Center's Changgeuk and Gugak ensembles, as well as guest performers, will grace the stage. Kim Geummi (guest) plays the role of Dokgap-i Dwae, while Seo Jinhee takes on the role of Hwaseon, leading the core of the production. The sounds of the Changgeuk ensemble and the performances of the Gugak ensemble vividly depict Dokgap-i Dwae's journey along Jirisan.
The significance of a production originating from Namwon continuing onto the metropolitan stage is noteworthy. By meeting a wider audience, a changgeuk that encapsulates the region's life and emotions will demonstrate the potential for expanding performance content born in the region.
The "Changgeuk-Centered World Music Drama Festival" introduces various music dramas born from the traditions and cultures of different countries, with a focus on our unique music drama, changgeuk. 국립민속국악원 대표창극 〈독갑이댁 수레노래〉 국립극장 무대 오른다
국립민속국악원은 오는 12일과 13일 오후 3시 서울 국립극장 하늘극장에서 대표창극 〈독갑이댁 수레노래〉를 선보인다. 2025년 남원에서 제작·초연한 이 작품은 ‘2026 창극 중심 세계음악극축제’ 초청작으로, 남원을 넘어 수도권 관객과 만난다.
〈독갑이댁 수레노래〉는 전쟁의 혼란 속에서 흩어진 가족을 찾아 지리산을 헤매는 독갑이댁과 딸 화선이의 여정을 통해 인간의 존엄과 모성애, 생명의 의미를 그린 창극이다. 남원과 지리산 일대의 현존하는 지명에 설화적 상상력을 더해 지역의 삶과 정서를 창극의 언어로 풀어냈다.
배삼식이 대본을 쓰고, 한승석이 작창과 음악감독을 맡았으며, 김정이 연출했다. 판소리의 음악성을 바탕으로 극적 서사와 현대적인 무대 표현을 결합해 남원과 지리산의 이야기를 오늘의 무대 언어로 재구성했다.
무대에는 국립민속국악원 창극단과 기악단을 중심으로 객원 출연진을 포함해 총 43명이 오른다. 김금미(객원)가 독갑이댁 역을, 서진희가 화선이 역을 맡아 극의 중심을 이끈다. 창극단의 소리와 기악단의 연주가 어우러져 지리산을 따라 펼쳐지는 독갑이댁의 여정을 생동감 있게 그려낸다.
특히 남원에서 출발한 작품이 수도권 무대로 이어진다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 지역의 삶과 정서를 담은 창극이 더 넓은 관객과 만나며, 지역에서 탄생한 공연 콘텐츠의 확장 가능성을 보여줄 예정이다.
'창극 중심 세계음악극축제'는 우리 고유의 음악극인 창극을 중심으로, 세계 각국의 전통과 문화에서 탄생한 다양한 음악극을 한자리에서 소개하는 축제이다. 오늘의 창극에서 출발해 서로 다른 무대 언어와 미학을 조명하며 동시대 음악극의 새로운 흐름을 모색하고자 한다.
