The first solo exhibition of a foreign emerging artist active in Jeonju will be held at the subculture complex cultural space 'Munhwa Gongpanjang Jakdang'.
Jeonju City announced on the 8th that the first solo exhibition 'Winterland' of Carter Blochwitz, a selected artist for this year's emerging artist space support project, will be held at 'SPACE J' and 'SPACE D' within Munhwa Gongpanjang Jakdang from the 16th to the 27th.
This exhibition is part of the 'Emerging Artist Space Support' project, which is conducted every year by Munhwa Gongpanjang Jakdang to provide exhibition opportunities for local emerging artists and support their creative activities.
This year's selection of a foreign emerging artist active in Jeonju added significance to the event.
The selected artist, Carter Blochwitz, previously participated in the second half of this year's Munhwa Gongpanjang Jakdang planning program 'It's Me: Listening Curation Pop-up in Jakdang', showcasing his own curation through photo works and music.
The 'Winterland' exhibition is a photo project that started from the artist's experience of visiting his hometown in 2022. The main works capture the early morning scenery of the farm where he spent his childhood, and he continued to record familiar places and landscapes in his hometown over the following weeks.
For the past four years of his activities in Korea, the artist mainly captured nightscapes, developing his own shooting style and visual expression. In this work, he applied this style to the familiar landscapes of his hometown since childhood. By looking at familiar places with a current perspective and expressing the changing perception of his hometown based on personal memories and the passage of time through photos, the artist allows viewers to delve deeper into his perspective and creative world through this exhibition.
전주서 활동하는 외국인 신진예술가, 첫 번째 개인전
전주에서 활동 중인 외국인 신진예술가의 첫 번째 개인전이 서브컬처 복합문화공간 ‘문화공판장 작당’에서 열린다.
전주시는 오는 16일부터 27일까지 문화공판장 작당 내 ‘SPACE J’와 ‘SPACE D’에서 올해 신진예술가 공간지원 사업 선정 작가인 카터 블로크위츠(Carter Blochwitz)의 첫 개인전 ‘Winterland’가 개최된다고 8일 밝혔다.
이번 전시는 문화공판장 작당이 지역 신진예술가에게 전시 기회를 제공하고 창작 활동을 지원하기 위해 해마다 추진하는 ‘신진예술가 공간지원’ 사업의 일환으로 추진된다.
특히 올해는 전주에서 활동하는 외국인 신진예술가가 처음 선정돼 의미를 더했다.
선정 작가인 카터 블로크위츠는 앞서 올해 하반기 문화공판장 작당 기획 프로그램인 ‘It's Me: 리스닝 큐레이션 팝업 in 작당’에 참여해 사진 작품과 음악을 매개로 자신만의 큐레이션을 선보인 바 있다.
이번 ‘Winterland’ 전시는 작가가 지난 2022년 고향을 방문한 경험에서 출발한 사진 프로젝트다. 대표작은 어린 시절을 보낸 농장의 이른 아침 풍경을 담았으며, 이후 몇 주간 고향 곳곳을 오가며 익숙한 장소와 풍경을 사진으로 기록했다.
작가는 한국에서 활동한 초기 4년간 주로 밤의 풍경을 촬영하며 구축해 온 자신만의 촬영 방식과 시각적 표현을 이번 작업에서는 어린 시절부터 익숙했던 고향의 풍경에 적용했다. 익숙한 장소를 현재의 시선으로 다시 바라보며, 개인의 기억과 시간의 흐름에 따라 새롭게 인식되는 고향의 모습을 사진으로 풀어낸다. 이번 전시를 통해 작가의 시선과 작업 세계를 보다 깊이 있게 만나볼 수 있다.
