The government of Lee Jae-myung is reportedly considering dispatching Korean military personnel and military assets to the Strait of Hormuz, prompting the Labor Party and civil society organizations to immediately urge the government to halt the ongoing review, stating that "any form of deployment is participation in war."
The Social Transformation Solidarity Council, the International People's Action Committee Against Trump, the Emergency Action of Korean Civil Society in Solidarity with Palestine, and others held an 'Urgent Press Conference to Condemn the Deployment of Korean Troops to the Strait of Hormuz by the Lee Jae-myung Government' in front of the Blue House on the morning of the 7th.
At the press conference, civil society organizations, labor unions, progressive party officials, Iranian activists, and others demanded the withdrawal of Korean troops from the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of the United States' military actions against Iran.
Previously, the Labor Party stated in a declaration on the 4th that the government is considering various forms of military contributions, including combat troops, logistical support, reconnaissance, and mine clearance, asserting that "sending Korean troops to support military operations in a war zone, regardless of the name given, constitutes participation in war."
The Labor Party particularly expressed critical views on the grounds for deployment mentioned by the government, such as energy security, protection of maritime routes, and economic interests.
The party pointed out, "It is not the government, conglomerates, or defense industry officials who stand to gain economic benefits from participating in this war, but the soldiers who have enlisted to fulfill their duty of national defense and are the ones actually risking their lives."
Furthermore, they argued that if Korea were to participate militarily in the US and Israel's actions against Iran, it could set a negative precedent for the future security of the Korean Peninsula.
The Labor Party emphasized that if Korea were to join in justifying preemptive military attacks based on the possibility of threats, it could weaken the grounds for opposing similar military actions on the Korean Peninsula in the future under the pretext of North Korea's nuclear weapons.
At the press conference, Lee Baek-yoon, co-chair of the Labor Party, also stressed that "regardless of the name given, deployment is participation in war."
He stated, "The government may call it logistical support or reconnaissance instead of combat troops, but the moment Korea sends its troops and military assets to a war zone to support US operations, Korea is also involved in the war," adding that "whether it is combat or rear support, it is not a fundamental difference."
He further stated, "Those who benefit from this war are different from those who actually pay the price," and criticized the government for sending soldiers to a war zone under the guise of national interest in the profits of conglomerates or defense industries.
The co-chair also mentioned the impact of deployment on the security of the Korean Peninsula, warning that "the door opened in the Strait of Hormuz today could bring war to this land tomorrow," and that "by bolstering the logic of the US attacking Iran, Korea could become a country that endorses that logic."
He emphasized that "what the government should do is not consider deployment but strive for the cessation of military actions, ceasefires, and diplomatic solutions," adding that "Korea should stand with international efforts to stop wars rather than escalate them."
Participants at the press conference demanded immediate cessation of the consideration of deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, refusal of Korea's military support and participation in the US military operations against Iran, and cessation of the US military attacks against Iran.
The government has stated that "no decision has been made regarding the deployment to the Strait of Hormuz." However, with the possibility of utilizing non-combat forces such as logistical support ships and maritime patrol aircraft being mentioned, controversies surrounding the deployment and participation methods are expected to continue for the time being.
The Labor Party stated, "We will continue to gather public opinion against the deployment policy until it is withdrawn and carry on with international solidarity activities," adding, "We oppose all attempts to mobilize soldiers under the guise of conglomerates' profits being national interests."
노동당·시민사회 “호르무즈 파병은 전쟁 참여…즉각 철회해야”
“군수지원·정찰도 군사작전 지원…재벌 이익을 국익으로 포장해 군인 동원해선 안 돼”
이재명 정부가 호르무즈 해협에 한국군 병력과 군사자산을 파견하는 방안을 검토하는 것으로 알려지면서 노동당과 시민사회단체들이 “어떤 형태의 파병이든 전쟁 참여”라며 즉각적인 검토 중단을 촉구하고 나섰다.
사회대전환 연대회의와 트럼프규탄 국제민중행동 조직위원회, 팔레스타인과 연대하는 한국 시민사회 긴급행동 등은 지난 7일 오전 청와대 앞에서 ‘이재명 정부의 한국군 호르무즈 파병 규탄 긴급 기자회견’을 열었다.
이날 기자회견에는 시민사회단체와 노동조합, 진보정당 관계자와 이란 활동가 등이 참석해 호르무즈 파병 반대와 미국의 대이란 군사행동 중단을 요구했다.
앞서 노동당은 지난 4일 성명을 통해 정부가 전투병뿐 아니라 군수지원, 정찰, 기뢰 제거 등 다양한 형태의 군사적 기여를 검토하고 있다며 “어떤 이름을 붙이더라도 한국군을 전쟁 지역에 보내 군사작전을 지원하는 것은 전쟁 참여”라고 주장했다.
노동당은 특히 정부가 파병의 명분으로 거론하는 에너지 안보와 해상교통로 보호, 경제적 이해관계에 대해 비판적인 입장을 나타냈다.
노동당은 “이 전쟁에 참여해 경제적 이익을 얻을 가능성이 있는 정부와 재벌 대기업, 방산업계 관계자들이 직접 전쟁터에 가는 것이 아니다”며 “실제로 위험을 감수해야 하는 것은 국방의 의무를 다하기 위해 입대한 군인들”이라고 지적했다.
또한 미국과 이스라엘의 대이란 군사행동에 한국이 군사적으로 참여할 경우 향후 한반도 안보에도 부정적인 선례가 될 수 있다고 주장했다.
노동당은 “위협이 될 가능성이 있다는 이유로 선제적인 군사공격을 정당화하는 논리에 한국이 동참한다면 향후 북핵을 명분으로 한반도에서 비슷한 군사행동이 제기될 경우 이를 반대할 명분도 약해질 수 있다”고 밝혔다.
이날 기자회견에서 이백윤 노동당 공동대표도 “이름을 무엇으로 붙이든 파병은 전쟁 참여”라고 강조했다.
이 공동대표는 “정부는 전투병이 아니라 군수지원함이나 초계기라고 말하지만 한국의 병력과 군사자산을 전쟁 지역에 보내 미군의 작전을 지원하는 순간 한국 역시 전쟁에 관여하게 된다”며 “전투냐 후방지원이냐는 본질적인 차이가 아니다”라고 주장했다.
이어 “이 전쟁에서 이익을 얻는 사람과 실제 대가를 치르는 사람이 다르다”며 “관세 협상에서 이익을 얻으려는 정부나 방산 특수를 기대하는 재벌 대기업이 호르무즈에 가는 것이 아니라 국방의 의무를 다하러 입대한 청년들이 그곳에 가게 된다”고 말했다.
그는 에너지 안보와 해상교통로 보호를 파병 근거로 제시하는 데 대해서도 “결국 누구의 이익을 지키기 위한 것이냐”며 “재벌의 이익에 국익이라는 이름을 붙여 군인들을 전쟁 지역으로 보내서는 안 된다”고 비판했다.
이 공동대표는 파병이 한반도 안보에 미칠 영향도 언급했다.
그는 “오늘 호르무즈에서 열어준 문으로 내일 전쟁이 이 땅에 들어올 수 있다”며 “미국이 이란을 공격한 논리에 한국군을 보태는 순간 한국 역시 그 논리를 승인한 국가가 될 수 있다”고 주장했다.
그러면서 “정부가 해야 할 일은 파병 검토가 아니라 군사행동 중단과 휴전, 외교적 해결을 위해 노력하는 것”이라며 “한국은 전쟁을 확대하는 편이 아니라 전쟁을 멈추려는 국제적 노력에 서야 한다”고 말했다.
기자회견 참가자들은 이날 ▲호르무즈 파병 검토 즉각 중단 ▲미국의 대이란 군사작전에 대한 한국의 군사적 지원과 참여 거부 ▲미국의 대이란 군사공격 중단 등을 요구했다.
정부는 현재까지 호르무즈 파병과 관련해 “결정된 것은 없다”는 입장을 밝히고 있다. 다만 군수지원함과 해상초계기 등 비전투 전력을 활용한 지원 가능성이 거론되면서 파병 여부와 참여 방식 등을 둘러싼 논란은 당분간 이어질 것으로 보인다.
노동당은 “파병 방침이 철회될 때까지 반전 여론을 모으고 국제연대 활동을 이어가겠다”며 “재벌 대기업의 이익을 국가적 이익으로 포장해 군인을 동원하는 모든 시도에 반대한다”고 밝혔다.
