Young successors from Korea, China, and Japan who continue the tradition of traditional papermaking techniques met in Jeonju, the home of traditional paper, to share their skills and experiences.
Jeonju Millennium Hanji Museum, under the Jeonju Cultural Foundation (Acting CEO Lee Sung-soon, Director of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Department of Jeonju City), announced that the "Three Kingdoms Paper Village" event, a cultural exchange event of traditional paper from Korea, China, and Japan, will be held for four days from October 7th to 10th.
Sponsored by Hansol Holdings, this event, unlike academic-centered exchanges, provides a platform for traditional paper successors from the three countries to share skills and communicate directly on-site.
Participants in this event include successors from the "Traditional Hanji Artisan University," supported by Jeonju City from 2025, as well as two successors recommended by Anhui Province, China, and two successors recommended by the Kokuhozan Nittaiji Association and the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.
The main programs include networking among traditional paper successors from Korea, China, and Japan, exploring traditional Hanji workshops, demonstrating and experiencing traditional papermaking, and exhibiting exchanges of traditional paper from the Three Kingdoms.
On the 8th, at the Jeonju Millennium Hanji Museum, the "Korea-China-Japan Traditional Paper Successors Networking" will take place, where young successors from each country will share experiences and cases on the preservation and succession of traditional papermaking techniques. Zhu Yongfeng from China (China Senji Paper Co., Ltd.), Yoshida Yuko from Japan (Kochi Prefecture Dosahwaji), and Kim Jin-myeong from Korea (Traditional Hanji Artisan University) will each present their country's traditional papermaking techniques and succession directions.
On the 9th at 2 p.m., a traditional papermaking demonstration and experience for citizens and tourists will be held at the Korean Traditional Culture Center. Successors Nishida Masaru from Japan and Cho Gyehwan and Han Yisoo from the Traditional Hanji Artisan University in Korea will showcase the papermaking process, and there will also be hands-on experiences with Chinese successors' rubbings and traditional paper raw material production.
Utsunomiya, Director of the Kokuhozan Nittaiji Association in Japan, said, "It is significant that the next generation of successors who will continue the traditional paper culture of the Three Kingdoms gather in one place to exchange skills and culture."
An official from the Jeonju Cultural Foundation stated, "This 'Three Kingdoms Paper Village' is meaningful as a practical exchange where traditional paper successors from Korea, China, and Japan share skills and experiences on-site," and expressed, "We will continue to nurture the next generation of Hanji artisans and expand international exchanges and solidarity to establish Jeonju as a leading city in traditional Hanji culture."
한‧중‧일 청년 후계자들, 전주서 전통종이 기술 나눈다
전통 종이의 본고장 전주에서 한·중·일 전통 제지 기술의 맥을 잇는 청년 후계자들이 만나 기술과 경험을 나눈다.
전주문화재단(대표이사 직무대행 이성순 전주시 문화체육관광국장) 전주천년한지관은 한‧중‧일 전통종이 문화 교류 행사인 ‘삼국지향(三國紙鄕)’을 오는 10월 7일부터 10일까지 나흘간 개최한다고 밝혔다.
한솔홀딩스 후원으로 마련된 이번 행사는 학술 중심의 교류에서 벗어나 삼국의 전통종이 후계자들이 현장에서 직접 기술을 공유하고 소통하는 자리로 마련됐다.
이번 행사에는 2025년부터 전주시가 지원하는 ‘전통한지 장인대학’ 후계자를 비롯해 중국 안후이성 경현시가 추천한 선지 후계자 2명, 일본 국보장황사연맹 및 일본 문화청이 추천한 화지 후계자 2명이 참여한다.
주요 프로그램은 ▲한·중·일 전통종이 후계자 네트워킹 ▲전통한지 공방 탐방 ▲전통종이 제조 시연 및 체험 ▲삼국 전통종이 교류 전시 등이다.
8일 전주천년한지관에서 열리는 ‘한·중·일 전통종이 후계자 네트워킹’에서는 각국 청년 후계자들이 전통 제지 기술의 보존과 계승을 주제로 경험과 사례를 공유한다. 중국 주용봉(朱永峰, 중국선지구분유한공사), 일본 요시다 유코(吉田裕子, 고치현 도사화지), 한국 김진명(전통한지 장인대학)이 각각 자국의 전통 종이 제조 기술과 계승 방향을 발표한다.
9일 오후 2시에는 한국전통문화전당에서 시민과 관광객을 위한 전통종이 제조 시연과 체험도 진행된다. 일본 니시다 마사루(西田勝) 후계자와 한국 전통한지 장인대학의 조계환·한이수 후계자가 제지 과정을 직접 선보이며, 중국 후계자들의 탁본 체험과 전통종이 원료 제조 체험도 함께 운영된다.
우츠노미야 전무이사(일본 일반사단법인 국보수리장황사연맹)는 “삼국의 전통 종이 문화를 이어갈 차세대 후계자들이 한자리에 모여 기술과 문화를 교류한다는 점에서 뜻깊다”고 말했다.
전주문화재단 관계자는 “이번 ‘삼국지향’은 한·중·일 전통종이 후계자들이 현장에서 기술과 경험을 나누는 실무 중심의 교류라는 점에서 의미가 있다”며 “앞으로도 차세대 한지 장인을 육성하고 국제적인 교류와 연대를 확대해 전주가 전통한지 문화의 중심도시로 자리매김할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
