Jeonju Jesus Hospital (Director Shin Chung-sik) has begun to operate the branch of the Cambodia Jesus Hospital established last year on a reduced scale according to local conditions. The hospital sees this as an opportunity for a transition to a sustainable missionary model, rather than a crisis.
Originally, the Jesus Hospital established the branch not for profit but to address the local medical backwardness and realize medical missions. However, due to the limitations of relying on donations and the difficulties in the local situation, adjustments became inevitable. In fact, it is known that other non-profit hospitals in the area are also considering transitioning to for-profit due to similar financial problems.
In response, the Jesus Hospital is focusing on training local medical personnel to develop sustainable operating methods while upholding its missionary values. In June, in collaboration with the Cambodia IU Medical School, the hospital plans to invite 10 medical students and nursing students to its main hospital in Jeonju for a two-week global medical talent development program.
Additionally, the hospital is considering various ways to train essential local personnel through regular exchanges of medical staff and to operate in a manner that reflects the stable demand for medical services in the expatriate community.
Lee Dae-young, head of International Health and Medical Affairs at the hospital, stated, "This operational adjustment is not a failure but a process to establish a better missionary strategy," and expressed, "Based on trust with the local community, we will continue to build a long-term and sustainable medical missionary model."
전주예수병원, 글로벌 의료선교 사역 지속…캄보디아 분원은 새로운 전환점 맞이해
전주 예수병원(병원장 신충식)이 지난해 개소한 캄보디아 예수병원 분원이 현지 여건에 따라 축소 운영에 들어갔다. 병원 측은 이를 위기가 아닌, 지속가능한 선교 모델을 모색하는 전환의 기회로 보고 있다.
예수병원은 당초 진료 수익보다는 현지 의료 낙후 문제를 해결하고 의료선교를 실현하기 위한 목적으로 분원을 설립했으나, 후원금 의존의 한계와 현지 상황의 어려움으로 조정이 불가피해졌다. 실제로 현지의 다른 비영리병원도 유사한 재정 문제로 영리화 전환을 검토 중인 것으로 알려졌다.
이에 예수병원은 선교적 가치를 지키면서도 지속 가능한 운영 방안을 마련하기 위해 현지 의료 인재 양성에 집중하고 있다. 6월에는 캄보디아 IU의과대학과 협력해 의대생 및 간호대생 10명을 전주 본원으로 초청, 2주간 글로벌 의료인재 양성 프로그램을 운영할 계획이다.
이와 함께 정기적인 의료진 교류를 통해 현지 필수 인력을 양성하고, 교민 사회의 안정적인 진료 수요를 반영한 운영 방안도 다각도로 검토 중이다.
이대영 국제보건의료본부장은 “이번 운영 조정은 실패가 아닌 더 나은 선교 전략 수립을 위한 과정”이라며 “현지와의 신뢰를 바탕으로 장기적이고 지속가능한 의료선교 모델을 구축해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
